  1. I think you also have to take into account that there may not be parental support for ballet as a career choice. "Ballet is fine as a hobby, but you need earn a living, consider job security, etc. Become a doctor, lawyer, engineer, whatever and then support the arts. You're going to college." These parents would see themselves as negligent if they didn't push their offspring towards a secure future.

  2. It's a shame to lose this production. I kind of wish that if the Joffrey felt they needed a change that they would have rescued the Stowall-Sendak (sp?) production.

My automatic snarky response generator clicked on when I read the NYT story

    linked above:

    1. Helgi Tomasson used the World's Fair concept in San Francisco just a little while ago. Why relocate it to Chi-town? If I were on the SF Ballet legal staff I would file a cease and desist order just for the publicity value.

    2. I hope that Wheeldon isn't going to use the Erik Larson bestseller, "Devil in the White City" as a source of inspiration. It would just be too revolting. http://www.amazon.com/The-Devil-White-City-Madness/dp/0375725601

  3. Other than the unique and extraordinary Natalia Makarova, have there ever been any other 5 ft. 2 in. women at ABT who have been provided with the opportunity of dancing the lead in Swan Lake?----You probably have to research the pre-McKenzie years. I think Eleanor D'Antuono was on the short side.

Since Misty has now learned the role and performed it, why do they need to bring in Kochetkova to dance with Herman going forward?--- Totally agree with you.

I do think McKenzie is prejudiced against short dancers. Reyes is great, but he seems to think that there is room for only one short principle female dancer.

  4. BAM jis not a Christmastime destination. When families come for a show, they also usually combine it with some other holiday activity like a wonderful meal, a look at the big Xmas tree in Rock Center, a trip to a toy store or a look at holiday department store windows. BAM does not have any of these attractions. Location, location, location.

    .

Gage and Tollner's is long gone, but there's the original Peter Luger's and Junior's is close by if you want real NY cheesecake. There's a zoo and ice skating and Frederick Law Olmsted's design in Prospect Park.
