  1. It's important to me :), but I take your point. But I assume the reason they only have one season a year (it's actually two programs) is because they lack money for more. So I'd think SFB would still be the Center's first priority, both because it's established there and because for all Kent's fame and D.C.-area roots, Farrell is still the bigger star. But I guess a big donor or two could make all the difference.

The Farrell company grew out of the summer intensives that she conducts for the Kennedy Center's Education Department. This links to a history of the program: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.kennedy-center.org/education/farrell/&ved=0ahUKEwjT1uXJrd_LAhVJFx4KHYfnDxYQFggbMAA&usg=AFQjCNGczeYqzp7u9ob3aclXJ1AfgNJO7w&sig2=QgoybagnHYjrTSCIlbKPjA

After reading her autobiography, I was left with the impression that she tries to live in the moment and take things as they come. I think the company might have had the potential to grow, but the interviews I've read and the company's performance schedule lead me to speculate that she's not interested in overseeing the marketing, development and the publicity efforts of running a thriving full time company. She wants to spend her time spreading the gospel of Mr. B at every opportunity. She circles the world staging, coaching, and teaching, not appearing at all interested in establishing an institution.

The opera company and the orchestra became constituents of the Kennedy Center long after they had been founded. The Farrell company is the first home grown classical performing arts company at the KenCen.

  2. Single-ticket purchases have now gone live on the Met's website, but, oddly, it's not allowing you to select your seats. I hope this is just a technical error that will be corrected.

    Plea

Updated at 12:02 p.m.: Website is still now allowing seat selection. Has ABT let us down yet again?

If the problem continues, try using another browser. I may be stating the obvious, but it is offered with helpful intentions. :-)
  3. I think ballet is closest to those sports that value perfect execution such as figure skating and diving, then closest to sports where better execution leads to better results (i.e. pole vault and ski jumping) and finally the least in common with those spots where the most important goal is to manipulate an object past the opposing team's defenses and score (hockey, soccer, etc,)

  4. True, Imspear...but it's that "Howdy! Neighborhood Gal" air that works against her in ethereal poetic roles such as the Sylph or the "After the Rain" pdd. It's not about Peck's technique or musicality, which are beyond reproach.

We are in total agreement. :-)

  5. Peck is one of my favorite ballerinas of those currently dancing. I think there's an aura of "girl next door," America's Sweetheart, realness that shines through everything she does. She's one of those dancers who makes the phenomenal things she does seem normal.

  7. For a period of time before Webre, founder Mary Day was artistic director and Choo San Goh was resident choreographer. Day was most well known as a teacher. Goh's choreography was widely admired. However, neither Day nor Goh had the flashy personality or PR savy that Webre has.

American Ballet Theatre: Ratmansky's The Sleeping Beauty

The beloved story of the princess Aurora--cursed to sleep for 100 years by an evil sorceress until awakened by a prince's kiss--is certain to cast a spell with the D.C. premiere of Alexei Ratmansky's monumental new staging.

    Opera House

  9. Meanwhile the advanced level, its said, is really just a finishing school for students who have come from all over.

This is from a 2009 article about SAB by Alastair Macauley, http://mobile.nytimes.com/2009/05/24/arts/dance/24maca.html?referer=

I know that the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet shows up in many NYCB dancers' bios as an early training ground.

Getting back to ABT JKO I think that Cynthia Harvey's appointment is very exciting news.
