  1. I had many favorites at ABT, NYCB, Stuttgart and Royal Ballet in the 70s and 80s, but wanted to mention Joey Carmen and Chris Jensen who danced with Joffrey in the early 70s.

They were both medium size and could dance allegro parts, "Interplay" being an example, and then come back after intermission to dance Ashton's "Monotones II" with superb skill control.

  2. I'm almost certain I saw Farrell in "Other Dances".

I love "Dances at a Gathering", "Interplay", "The Four Seasons", "Fancy Free", "In The Night", "Other Dances", "The Goldberg Variations" (a lot!), "The Cage", "The Concert", "Moves" and "New York Export, Opus Jazz" which was done by The Joffrey in the seventies.

    I think I like Robbins. :)

  3. La Volta must have been a respectable dance, as it was danced at court. Does anyone think it was pushing the envelope? The man placed his hands on the womans waist and lifted her. It looks as if the couples were making more body contact than the other court dances I've seen.

Psavola, if you have anything you can share, I'm sure it would be appreciated. :)

  4. Thanks for the Jeanne D' Arc info Obbligato. I've never read "Little Women" but I love the most recent movie. I look at the women and think this is what Taglioni and her contemporaries must have looked like.

Diane, though I didn't read Hesse until I was in my twenties, I have to say that he is one of my favorites. I often return to "Narcissus and Goldmund" and "Siddhartha" -- two of my favorite stories ever!

  5. Thanks for the info on Carmena, Nina. I've always loved "Interplay". How do the guys do with the consecutive double tours? I think the last guy has to do four double tours in a row.

When you say Carmena 'finishes all steps', are you saying that a lot of NYCB dancers do not?

  6. I thought Korbes was really pretty last summer when she stepped in for Muniers in "Tchaikovsky Suite No Three". "Interplay" is no piece of cake technically so she must be strong.

I don't think I've seen Carmena dance. Could you elaborate for me Ciara?

  7. When I was in elementary school I had no patience for reading but really liked the pictures of Joan of Arc praying to the archangels and burning at the stake.

I did read a book called "To Dance, To Dream", which had short stories of great ballerinas. I especially remember the chapter about Taglioni.

In high school I loved "Giants in the Earth" by Ole Rolvag and "Nicholas and Alexandra" by Robert K. Massie.

I read "Rebecca" after high school and loved it. "My Cousin Rachel" is another good one by DuMaurier.
