Burlaka/Medvedev Nutcracker, Berlin, out on DVD

Recommended Posts

BelAir's DVD of Burlaka & Medvedev's "reconstruction after Ivanov" of the original 1890s Imperial Mariinsky NUTCRACKER is available for pre-order on amazon.co.uk and other Eurozone Amazon sites! To be released October 30, 2015, in the UK; a few days later in Germany & France.

Best of all, this version faithfully recreates the designs of the original Tsarist Imperial production ca1892/93. Burlaka & Medvedev consulted Tsarist-era documents and the Stepanov notes, while crafting a "new" ballet in the spirit of Ivanov & Petipa's times, for ballet dancers of the 21st-C.

Salenko & Walter star. This film is the same as the Dec 2014 telecast shown in Europe via Mezzo TV, which some here may already have.

The release is in the PAL format, coded for Region 2, so be sure to have your region-free/all-zones DVD player handy, as most serious balletomane film collectors have. :) In other words, it appears that this is being manufactured only for the European market at this time.

Apparently the DVD and Blu-ray will be released on the North American market also. It's release date is November 13, and Amazon.com is taking orders.

It's maddening, but the European branches of Amazon tend to list every video as Region 2/B2 by default, and unless an image of the back cover is available, it's hard to know for certain what the format really is.

In any case, the American version is less costly than the British release, at least at the "pre-order" price.
