these three publicity photos, submitted to US newspapers date over a 5-year period, mid-20th century from 1939 to 1944.

Marina Semyonova's is datelined Moscow, and documents a dancer not seen in the US.

Tamara Toumanova's photos note her presence in the States, on stage and screen.

The captions are so interesting..."She can stand on her toes on one foot for nearly 60 seconds.." on Toumanova's balance, and how about the "Stalin Price laurate" on Semyonova..? I wonder how people would take that info back then...

That photo of Toumanova in mid air is a real surprise. Not that Toumanova could jump, but that a press photographer in the 30s could capture the sense of controlled abandon that jumps like this evoke. I don't think you find this very often in the staged Ballets Russes publicity photos of the period. Thanks, rg. tiphat.gif
