I bought a copy last year at www.Alibris.com.  They had two versions--one published in 1938, and the other a  few years later, 1942, I believe.

I was interested to see the prices -- quite low for what is, to me, such a valuable book.  (When I first discovered ballet, Cyril WB was my first window on the 19th century.  I must have read that book, cover to cover, four times.)  I bought mine back in 1977 and it was $15 then -- several copies on that list are $15 now.  A few years later, when Beaumont died, you couldn't get one for love or money, as they say, and when they started coming back on the market the book was generally $60 in New York's Ballet Shop.

Anyone who is interested in 19th century ballet should have this book, IMHO.  Thanks for the suggestions on how to find a copy, rg and atm.

Alexandra, my introduction to ballet was also through Beaumont's book.  During The War my older sister had a beau (an English Naval officer) who came to our shores often during those years.  He took her to the ballet many times, and as an appreciation for her company, and the comfort of being a part of our family when he was in town, he gave her a copy of the book.  My sister and the Englishman  remained friends until his death ten years ago.

Oh, rg, thank you -- I agree, the descriptions aren't always complete, and this will be invaluable.  Also a good check list for those who THINK they have the complete Cyril WB

It's one of life's little trials that every other ballet I want to read about seems to be covered in Ballets Past and Present, which in my case I have not got. I imagine it as being as long as the original volume!

4 copies of 'ballets past & present' are on bibliofind at the moment, the price range is $20 - $50.
as indicated above the supplement vols. are about a third, or just less, the size of the initial: complete book of ballets.
