Did anyone hear the story on NPR's "All Things Considered" today about the latest group of opera fans? They're young and they're equally fond of punk rock.

When asked why they've taken to opera, the answer is nearly always the same: they like how "extreme" opera is, that the human voice is pushed to its limits, as is the human voice in punk rock. Some commented that both opera and punk rock lyrics describe great drama. Opera takes terrible tragedies and ennobles them, turning them into something sublime, whereas punk rock takes equally horrendous life stories and wallows in them. But both are expressions in the extreme and that's what keeps this new young audience entralled by opera.
