A review of the Ballet of the Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre in "Le Corsaire" by Ilona Landgraf in her blog, "Landgraf on Dance."

Quote

Matvey Nikishaev’s Conrad was no macho braggart but rather a focused, cool-minded leader with a loving heart. Prowess and ease radiated from his demeanor, confirming his unassailable status. His legs sliced the air like a hot knife through butter, and he easily fought off two assailants simultaneously. Medora (Anna Kudryavtseva) played the coquettish seductress at the slave market (when sure of Conrad’s protection). Later, feeling safe in the cave and (literally) wearing the pants, she took revenge on Lankedem and put him in his place....

A review of London City Ballet by Teresa Guerreiro for CultureWhisper.

Quote

The programme spans more than half a century of creativity, with revivals of rarely seen short pieces plus one new work. All are interesting in their own way, all present different facets of dance. Of particular interest is Ballade, a 1970s work by Kenneth MacMillan, which was only seen once during a small Royal Ballet troupe's visit to Lisbon. Featuring three men and a woman, it was inspired by the first date of MacMillan and his wife-to-be Deborah, and has now been painstakingly reconstructed by Marney, supported by the choreographer's widow.

Two retired ballet teachers and dancers are honored in Columbus, Ohio.

Quote

Before Alice Grant — now a retired educator, classical ballerina and dancer — performed a self-choreographed solo in Pearl Bailey's shows, warmed up backstage with jazz singer Cab Calloway and opened up her own dance studio in Columbus, she was a little girl standing in line with her mom to register for dance classes, only to be turned away for the color of her skin.

Now 81, Grant, along with Bettye Robinson — who founded the first Black ballet studio and company in Columbus — will forever be remembered under the Lincoln Theatre's marquee on the Walk of Fame.

Big names don't come much more enticing than English National Ballet principals Sangeun Lee and Gareth Haw, who will reprise their transporting interpretation of the White Swan pas de deux from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, and Steven McRae, Royal Ballet principal newly returned to the stage after a serious injury, with his thrilling tap dance number Czárdás, accompanied by Charlie Siem on violin and Caroline Jaya Ratnam on piano. As well, Constance Devernay-Laurence, the award-winning former principal with Scottish Ballet, will dance a brand new piece especially commissioned from Ballet Nights regular Jordan James Bridge.

Swan Song, which follows the National Ballet of Canada’s production of Swan Lake, as directed by veteran dancer Karen Kain in her final act before retirement, is a deeply personal project for Campbell, who originally trained to be a dancer and got her start with the company’s prestigious ballet school.
