dirac
An article on how weight requirements are currently enforced in ballet and the influence of the fitness craze by Chloe Angyal in The Washington Post. Quote Company directors today commonly say they want “fit” dancers — provided that they also appear fit. That is, in addition to having the strength and stamina to dance a full ballet, they must adhere to the conventional understanding of what a fit person looks like. It’s not enough to lift your pas de deux partner over your head: You also need to have a six-pack while you’re doing it. Link to comment
dirac
A review of the Australian Ballet by Jansson J. Antmann for Limelight. Quote It would be hard to imagine a better way of achieving this than with the triple bill, New York Dialects, which opened last night. It is fitting that Hallberg’s arrival should be paralleled by the seminal Serenade, which was the first original work created by George Balanchine after his arrival in America. Hallberg has paired it with the world premiere of his first commission as Artistic Director – Watermark by the celebrated choreographer Pam Tanowitz. In programming two of Balanchine’s neoclassical masterpieces alongside this new work, Hallberg has also boldly recast the father of American ballet as the forefather of postmodern dance. In doing so, Hallberg delivers an evening that needs to be considered as a whole, rather than three individual works in a standard triple bill. Link to comment
