Tomassason understands the artistry of this particular work intimately. From 1975 to 1983 he performed the role of Oberon, king of the fairies, as a principal dancer at New York City Ballet under the directorship of Balanchine. Although he initially learned the role from fellow principal dancer Edward Villella, Tomasson’s proximity to the ballet’s creator offered him a chance to get input directly from the choreographer.

A review of the Sarasota Ballet's Paul Taylor double bill by Marina Harss in The Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

The prime example here is the lead male role in “Brandenburgs,” danced by the veteran principal dancer Ricardo Graziano. He is the Apollonian ideal around which everything revolves. Graziano was coached in the role by former Taylor dancer Michael Trusnovec – a paragon of the Taylor demi-god style – both in person, last year when the company premiered the work, and again this year on Zoom and in person. In his pensive, minor-key solo, Graziano bends and twists, filling the space with an energy that seems to emanate from the core of his body.
