rg
two scans of publicity photos of rehearsals of the Balanchine/Stravinsky ORPHEUS at NYCB when Mikhail Baryshnikov and Peter Martins were dancing the title role, the former with Kay Mazzo as Eurydice and the latter with Karin von Aroldingen. with the ballet now on stage at Lincoln Center in NIKOLAI AND THE OTHERS these seem extra timely. rg
more ORPHEUS: scanned photo presumably from 1948 with Pluto (Edward Bigelow?) and Eurydice (Tallchief) in a moment posed for the camera. a kneeling pose for Eurydice in front of Pluto's rock is not, if mem. serves, part of Balanchine's choreography. a standing pose for Eurydice with her back to the audience, as shown in the ORPHEUS rehearsal scene of NIKOLAI AND THE OTHERS, is the way Eurydice gets first revealed to Orpheus in the course of ballet.
