innopac Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 There is a clip on youtube.... search with this spelling... Maksimova Liepa. It is from the ballet film Galatea which was based on My Fair Lady.
Mel Johnson Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Wonder if it owes anything to the 1895 Petipa staging of Pygmalion, other than subject matter.
innopac Posted April 18, 2008 Author Posted April 18, 2008 This looks like this is the source of the youtube clip. I also found this post by Mashinka. In 1977 "Liepa played the title role in TV-version of “Galatea” (choreography by D. Bryantsev)." quote from this link
Mel Johnson Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Must not be then, the 1895 one had music by Trubetskoi, and was a four-acter. It was one of the first of Petipa's Neo-Anacreontic ballets, which included Glazunov's "The Seasons".
Mashinka Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 No links to Petipa at all. The music is the familiar Lerner and Lowe and the story line is the same as the musical except Higgins teaches dance and not elocution. Wonderful video if you can get hold of it with a terrific cameo of Konstantine Zaklinsky as a drinking pal of Doolittle's.
giraffe Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 My family has this tape and I grew up watching it. It probably was one of the reasons that I started dancing in the first place. I always have enjoyed watching Galatea.
