From Lena Horne and Joe Louis to Spike Lee and Oprah Winfrey, the Bud Billiken Parade has historically been a showcase for black pioneers whose success in areas traditionally dominated by whites gave young African-Americans new goals to aspire to.

This year is no exception, with Ayisha McMillan as one of the featured participants in today's parade. McMillan, 27, who grew up in Oak Park, is one of a handful of black professional ballet dancers in the nation's top ballet companies. She is in her fourth season with the North Carolina Dance Theatre in Charlotte after six seasons with the Houston Ballet.
