Leigh Witchel
I know this is utterly trivial, but what would a board like this be if we couldn't discuss utter trivialities? Am I being hopelessly old-fashioned, or does anybody else wish that they'd change the company tradition a bit for Ms. Quinn and let one of the men lead her out for her bow instead of the women? All the female dancers onstage are escorted by a partner if they have one for their bows. It feels awkward to act as if Quinn is somehow neuter in gender. I don't think it would make her any less of a conductor if she had a cavalier to escort her for applause, and it seems more gallant. Link to comment
oberon
Yes, that is a good idea... I do like the way Quinn bows from the podium after she enters the pit...she stops and takes in the audience at every level of the house and then bows her head. Often it seems during the curtain calls that the ballerina almost "forgets" to fetch the maestro...sometimes you can see the partner mouthing "Go get the conductor!" Link to comment
carbro
Leigh, you reviewed the Greek program, so you must have been there. Wasn't that the night I saw Jock bring Quinn out for her bow? I was surprised at first, but then I realized that it actually felt nicer having the Gentleman do the honors with a female conductor. Link to comment
charlieloki
i was there for that performance, and yes, it was nice to see jock welcome ms quinn to the stage -- his smile was radiant, and so was hers Link to comment
oberon
Tewsley brought Quinn out after MUSAGETE, gallantly kissing her hand. Lovely... Link to comment
Ari
Am I being hopelessly old-fashioned, or does anybody else wish that they'd change the company tradition a bit for Ms. Quinn and let one of the men lead her out for her bow instead of the women? Oh, I'm so glad you brought this up, Leigh. Quinn being escorted onstage by the ballerina bothered me all week when the company was here in Washington, and I wished they'd adapted the tradition to suit the changing times. Link to comment
