  1. It's because of Ballet Alert! that I've been able to - help my daughter receive a much better ballet education; learn more about one of, if not the most beautiful arts; meet such a broad cross section of interesting and interested people across the world; make some of the best new pals; be able to keep up with breaking ballet news across the continents; find out about performances that I'd like; understand the nuances of different choreographers and dancers and spend waaaaaaay too much time on the Internet! :huepfen: :ermm::flowers::wub:

  2. We're heading down to Brooklyn because we thought we couldn't make it to NJPAC. Now it turns out we could have but c'est la vie, eh?

    If any Ballet Alert!niks are planning on attending and would like to say hello in the flesh, please let me know. :blushing:

  3. Who can find a virtuous ballet message board? Her price is far above rubies....

    From an out an out neophyte who would have been slogging along behind the eight ball when it comes to understanding ballet from an educational trajectory, I can not thank you enough. In addition, the insight you've helped me gain as an audience member is without a doubt much more than "pretty good"... So pop the corks and we'll all drink to the health of Ballet Alert! :bouncing: :huepfen: :flowers: :gossip: :jump: :blushing::flowers::flowers:

  4. Although I'm not familiar with these books, you'll find that if you click on the Amazon link above {Ballet Alert! receives some small - but helpful - remuneration this way. :thumbsup:} go to the Books section and type in "Drina" you'll find quite a number of them. :gossip:

  5. I just did a search on Cranko's version and came up with several intersting sites... And I had to laugh when I read the article from August 14th's Sun Times...about the new marketing director's approach and her use of a shot of a "single ballet toe shoe spattered with blood"

    I wonder if this is any hint as to the approach that will be taken in this production. Treefrog, please promise to give us your impressions of the performance, OK?

  6. Treefrog, I know that you are well read and, thus, have read Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"...so are you looking for some specifics on Cranko's version?

    Maybe if you put that as a subtitle for this thread you'll flag down some passersby? :thumbsup:

    Do you have Robert Greskovic's Ballet 101: A Complete Guide to Learning & Loving Ballet? If not - click on the Amazon link above and send for it - pronto! I would like to have it as a book on tape...with video clips! :yes:

    Hang in there, I'm sure someone will come to your rescue!

  7. If you go to NYCB's website you can read more about Harlequinade.

    Here's the intro:

    As a student, Balanchine danced in Marius Petipa's Les Millions d'Harlequin. In Balanchine's two-act version, which he created for the 65th anniversary of the original production, the choreographer, by his own admission, "attempted to remain faithful to the spirit of Petipa's dances" and follows the tradition of the commedia dell'arte.

    I'm looking forward to seeing it performed having only read about it in Villella's biography.

  8. Alexandra thank you so much for posting that link to Mindy Aloff's piece/blog... Boy, I wish I could have attended that presentation but all it was sold out - as are the upcoming ones. :)

    Reading Aloff's Letter from New York dated September 29th was extremely enlightening. Almost like having a class in ballet history, online. I especially loved the descriptions of the acting by Nora Kaye - wow! And the comments by Owens and Mahler were very interesting as well.. So much information all of which will help those of us who are attending to understand the depth of what we're hoping to see.

    Excellent. I also appreciated the introduction in which Aloff questions the reasoning behind not performing various pieces by Fokine, as well.

    Thank you so much and thank you to Ms. Aloff!

  9. Victoria, you sold me on it. We're going on November 5th and will see:

    * Diversion of Angels

    * Symphonic Variations

    * Pillar of Fire

    * Raymonda (Grand Pas Classique)

    After reading this thread, as well as the various other threads about Tudor and Ashton especially, I figured this was our opportunity and I'd better grab it.

    :gossip: It sounds very exciting!

  10. Speaking for myself (well, who else would I be speaking for?), I do find casting for ABT more important in terms of ticket buying than repertory. Not so with NYCB.

    Might this be worthy of a thread or even a poll?

    zerbinetta, it does make a difference to me who is dancing at NYCB...but I have to admit, that unless there is a particular dancer I can't stand :wink: , I do look more at what is being performed at NYCB than by whom...as opposed to ABT where I am generally more interested in who is dancing what. That said, I do care what is being danced at ABT...and will try to avoid certain ballets sometimes. How's that for a confusing statement? :)

    I suppose this brings us back to the feeling that ABT is more "star" driven. :yawn: :)
