It was great to see so many performances in which the fourth ring was open and sold.  Proof positive that in instances where ticket sales are weak, it's not because of Covid.  It's because people are simply not interested in the content of the performance and/or the performers.

It will be interesting to see how many weeks of performances ABT puts on this Summer.

Not only was the 4th ring open, they were charging $82 for seat up there!

There's a difference between an open class and an open rehearsal, and I think that's a distinction that was potentially important for @On Pointe's (and maybe others') initial comments. Maybe it's a distinction without enough of a difference to matter — but it does seem worth at least considering.

Of course.  I didn’t mean to imply otherwise. I also think that a company class is not the same as class for pre-professionals.  I do think, however that once one is a professional, observation is not the inhibiting or awkward force it may be for others. I’m sure everyone feels their own way about this.

From someone who has been a dancer in this kind of scenario, it’s not the worst thing ever. We’re observed by people watching company class all the time in the studio. It doesn’t feel much different in my opinion. Everyone is kind of “in the zone” before a performance and having an audience doesn’t affect much.

Absolutely. I have been observed in rehearsal situations many times and I don’t find it intrusive at all.  I also think it’s a great way for audience members to see the hard work behind the magic they get to see with all the costumes and lights.  It didn’t seem like anyone was performing for the audience.  I’d previously been to PNB open rehearsal and this was a different and interesting experience.

  4.  Thanks to mille-feuille, i was able to attend this afternoon and just loved  watching the company class. What a treat.  I think class on performance days (especially so late and close to matinee call time)  serves its own purpose for each dancer, and we were privileged to be flies on the proverbial wall to be able to observe this. As Wendy said, we were invited into a space that is usually sacred and private.  I think that’s why there weren’t tons of corrections. For some, it was just waking up and getting ready to perform in the matinee, for others who maybe weren’t doing the show this afternoon, more of a focused class to challenge themselves….  Gonzalo gave some challenging combos and it was funny seeing who was like - seriously??  As a performer, I found  it to be such a lovely way to observe these dancers in such a vulnerable way- no lights, costumes or make-up to hide behind or character to take on.  I also really enjoyed trying to identify some dancers with whom I’m less familiar. Alexa Maxwell and Bailey Jones were among those who caught my eye, and Mira is impossible not to watch, but I already knew that.  As others have said- Megan was there to WORK.  I also enjoyed seeing Indiana Woodward and Unity Phelan giggling as they faced each other at the Barre- I bet this was an interesting experience to have such a large audience present, and I also know that class on stage as opposed to with a mirror in a studio is an adjustment. I think it was Sara Mearns who said on her IG that this was the first time the company had done this in her time.
I’m sad I didn’t realize there was another program at 5, I would have been sure to attend.  Thanks to all who are posting reports!

  5. Adding my 2 cents on Friday night’s performance.
I have been a huge Bouder fan for many years, but from the 4th ring, she really did seem out of place amongst the rest of the cast. Also, for me, her arms were pretty but it was a lack of suppleness in her torso and inability to match the penche lines of the rest of the dancers that was most disappointing to me. And yes, next to Ashley Laracey (who was just gorgeous) it was even more apparent.
as for the rest of the evening, Mira is such a star and Megan and Anthony were playful and perfect. Megan is really better than ever and it’s delightful to watch.
Sara and Russell were divine in Diamonds. You could sense the love and care between them and they really luxuriated in the grandeur of the choreography.  The corps were polished throughout the whole evening.
30 for 30 is definitely working as the house was full of young  audience members all dressed up for an evening at the ballet. I can’t help but wish there were other discounts for us over 30 though! Over $80 for a non-nutz 4th ring ticket really stings.  I very much miss the 4th ring society!

I have to wonder about why Aladdin closed but there have been no other closures based on breakthrough Covid.  I think Disney took a more proactive role in testing even though everyone was vaccinated.  I'm guessing that most organizations are assuming that since everyone is vaccinated, they are not engaging in any additional testing for Covid.  Don't ask don't tell.  If you don't feel well stay home until you feel better, but we are not requiring you to go get a Covid test or to tell us the results of any such test.

Aladdin had to close because they didn’t have the cast members to fill in. There are only so many understudies available!

  7. For those members of this board who were fans of Athan Sporek in Nutcracker (as both Fritz and the prince) he will be performing the Jester Trio in SL on Feb 14,  15 (eve) 16 (mat) 18, 20 and 22 (Eve). :)

I have had the great pleasure of working with him in other projects and his mom shared these dates on her public Facebook.

  8. Not sure if this is where I should be asking...

looks like the re-vamped the NYCB website, and it's lovely, but I can no longer find a page listing the dancers. This was one of my favorite aspects of having the site. I could just be looking wrong... if anyone finds it, please let me know!

Sandi, since you watch demisoloists as well, :) . be sure to watch the Bizet when it's broadcast; in the first movement, Claire Kretzschmar , recent winner of the Levin Award, is superb as the demi who begins, I seem to remember, on stage left. She is tall and blonde, so you can't miss her. Gorgeous. Why she was not promoted the other day in the mass of promotions to soloist is a mystery, to put it politely.

I can't wait to see her. I caught her in Sleeping Beauty last week and am definitely impressed.

Thank you rg, for the casting list!

  10. I am thrilled to hear that the house was packed! The lady at the State box office (I refuse to call it the Koch) implied to me I could sit anywhere I wanted if I wanted to pay- but maybe it was because I was a single. I remember seeing Red Angels in a PBS presentation and really liking it. How was Serenade? I love Sara, Ashley and Rebecca, and its my favorite ballet, so this was a dream cast for me, but I just couldn't justify paying that price. :-(

  11. So, tonight I first went to the Zucker box office, and was honestly surprised not to see tickets listed there- it being a random Tuesday etc... So I went over to see what they had at the box office. They seemed to have many tickets available for $100 and up. I was offered fourth ring for $91. That is insane! I was a fourth ring society member, but unfortunately not the season right before they discontinued it, but I would never pay so much for 4th ring. They also had $59 4th ring or $39 partially obstructed view in the third ring.

I am sure there were many unsold seats in the house tonight, and that makes me really sad. I was so hoping to see Mearns and Bouder together in Serenade. :-(

  12. I was there today, and Lauren Lovette was stunning. Lush, sparkling.....Chase Finlay partnered her crisply and thoughtfully. Mary Sell was great as dewdrop. I also especially loved Claire Kretchmar (sp?) as coffee. If it wasn't for the 8 year old boy exclaiming "I'm Bored!" And " I want to leave" every two minutes sitting next to me, it would have been a perfect matinee!
