  1. I was just in Detroit last weekend to see the Kirov, and I saw a large spectrum of dress. It was a matinee, but I saw satin opera coats, little girls in taffeta party dresses. I saw alot of suits, personally I wore one also. I think your suggestion would be appropriate.

[Edited by moderator to remove quote of entire previous post.]

  2. This seemed to have worked, as the audience didn't leave en masse after 'the kiss,' as they did at the Saturday matinee.

    :jawdrop:

I was at the Sunday performance and there were alot of little kids, and there was alot of"I am tired" whining going on during the last intermission. So I could see where people may have left early.

It was long but I really enjoyed the performance, even though I am not sure who danced what roles.

  3. I am planning to come to Detroit for three of the four days when Kirov performs at the Opera House. I've contacted the Press Office at the theatre AND the Ardani representative for casting information. The latter source has the most "current" information and states as follows:                                                                  10/20   -  Vishneva/Fadeyev;                                                                          10/21   -  Novikova/Sarafanov;                                                                           10/22M -  Osmolkina/Schklyarov;                                                                        10/22E -  Somova/Fadeyev(?);                                                                            10/23M -  Novikova/Korsakov.

I didn't question the Ardani rep about Vishneva's commitments elsewhere, though

the rest of the information is as sound as it gets at the time of this post.

The casting insert on the Berkeley program last night listed the following changes from the Berkeley website:

Irma Nioradze is being replaced by Novikova (Aurora) and Esina (Lilac Fairy)

Shkliarov is partnering Sonova in place of Fadeev, who is replacing Igor Kolb in another performance

Vostrotina is replacing Pavlenko as Lilac Fairy

    Ostreykovskaya replaces Pavlenko as Florina.

It looks like similar casting will make its way to Detroit.

I may try to get a Detroit paper today, as the online additions of the Free Press and News just have the usual stories of the history of the ballet and company, plus stories about the local extras. Nothing on casting.

  4. I'll keep my eyes open for anything in the Detroit papers. Thanks to reading this MB, I know Kirov castings are not carved in stone, so I just picked the performance that worked well for me. Though Ardani "says" Diana V and Lopatkina are cast, I am not going to get go nuts if they are not.

  5. As a friendly reminder to anyone, please remember preliminary Mariinsky casts are liable to change and what is announced here now, won't necessarily be what you will actually see!

Just think like Gina and be happy to see any cast.  :tomato:

Marc, I think that is probably wise advise. I've sort of been toying with the idea of traveling from NJ to Detroit, I'd like to see Visneva/Zelensky/Lopatkina, but I'm thinking it's a long way to travel for something so chancy.

And It's not like I'd like to see the Sergeyev version for it's own sake. It can understand why some love it , but I'm not one of them.

    Richard

I want to see the same cast as you in Detroit, but I am going to role the dice since I only live an hour from downtown Detroit.

  6. Now, to whom do we address the screaming-baby complaints?

To the parents. Something's gotta give. Some people refuse to understand that if they have children, they either have to curtail their ballet going (as I do) or pay a ton of money for babysitting. I think it's got to do with society's obsession with self-fulfillment at any cost.

I saw ABT in Cleveland on a Saturday night, quite a few toddlers in the audience, but very well behaved. I was rather surprised as I would not have taken my 4 year old. He can barely sit through kid's movies during the day. It's not only at the ballet, but I see the same behavior at movie theaters. I couldn't believe the number of young children at an 8pm showing of the Aviator this past winter(very loud and much walking the kids around).

  7. I thought the most damaging cut of all was the first part of Act 4, as it cuts one of the most moving scenes in the ballet, which is Siegfried searching among the swans and finally finding the forlorn Odette huddled in the center of the swan line.

I think Corella's expressions dont really play well on the small screen. On tv, they look hammy. I dont know if Swan Lake is the ballet for over-the-top expressions anyway. I think quiet desperation works better in this ballet.

I thought Murphy was a surprisingly regal, touching Odette. She had a quiet dignity about her that I found touching. I dont however think she's a natural adagio dancer -- her movements dont have the natural poetic grace of say, Natalia Makarova. I think with time Murphy will be a great Odette. For now, she's a very good Odette.

I saw Corella dance Swan Lake in Cleveland in March and thought he was not quite as hammy as when I saw him live. I really liked him better with Gillian than Paloma.

  8. It lists the entire cast with two exceptions:  While Herman Cornejo is listed as Benno, unless I've overlooked them, his two pas de trois companions are nowhere to be found! I hope the pd3 has not been cut!

Oh, they cannot cut the most important scene!! - Herman Cornejo w/his sister, Erica & Reyes (if I remember correctly). We'll see tomorrow night

Thank you everyone for info. Now it seems that DVD will be on sale tomorrow, too.

I am looking forward to seeing Gillian and Angel. I saw SL in Cleveland in March with the same cast other than Paloma danced the lead. Herman,Erica and Reyes were great.

  9. Glad you de-lurked, Starr!  Maybe you'd like to tell more about the ABT performance you saw in LA.  Aside from her flubbed fouettes, what did you think of Paloma?  And Jose, who happens to be a particular favorite of mine?  Any special highlights on the program?

Even if you don't get to see much, there's a lot of other talk on these forums, and I hope you'll add your comments and questions.

I saw Paloma in Cleveland in March, I decided to see her and Angel instead of Gillian since she'll be on PBS. I think Julie did opening night so she didn't dance on the weekend, would have loved to seen her.

  10. Thanks for this link, art076.

Well, our old question re. 'Which version?" has been answered:  the Soviet (Konstantin Sergeyev) version will be performed.  Lopatkina is dancing Lilac Fairy, which can only mean the Soviet version.

It will be wonderful to see this version, then compare it to the "pure Petipa" version to be performed by the Royal Ballet on its US tour, later on in the season!

I am a new poster, but have lurked awhile. Just wanted to thank you for your great reports from St. Petersburg. I am just excited about seing the Mariinsky in Detroit. Even more so that they are not doing Swan Lake or Giselle! :yahoo:
