Oh wow - I've never seen Mariinsky ballet's production of La Bayadere!  What a treat, and in my hometown at that :)

Do we know when casting usually gets announced?

I'd love to see Khoreva, she seems so promising, but I also want to see some of the more seasoned principals (not sure they'll be back in the bay area before they retire!).

Since it’s tour casting, it tends to be released about a month or two in advance, but it’s always subject to change, so take it with a grain of salt.

Perhaps, against all odds, she is learning the role of Jane? Either as an understudy, or sometime down the road?

Or, she's learning whatever role Cassandra Trenary (I believe, I could be wrong) plays in the trailer-- she appears briefly through the doorway:

I found Nagahisa’s performances as the third odalisque and as Manu (in D.C. over a year ago) well worth seeing though Kennedy Center was, I suppose, fortunate is getting three experienced dancers in all the main leading roles in all casts.

(She may not be ready for it NOW —and unlike Nuikina/Khoreva has not, to my knowledge, ever been cast in any Bayadere lead—but one day I imagine Bulanova might make quite a striking Gamzatti. Certainly I can easily imagine the Rajah removing her veil and Solor having a moment of weakness.)

I saw her 3rd Shade that tour too, she is quite lovely though in videos I’ve seen as well she has no presence. She seems quite nervous and shy all the time.

I agree with Bulanova. She and Khoreva will be utterly stunning in a few years, and with a few more years of experience behind them I have no doubt I’ll love them. But right now I can’t stand seeing them in all of these roles.

Khoreva and Nuykina have been cast to do leads in “La Bayadère” this summer. Not overly thrilled about that.

Great news, Thank you for sharing. however, for me personally a lot depends on the casting. I can't stand another iteration of "girlish" portrayals of M.Khoreva and/or M.Nagahisa. Brought they “mature” ballerinas for the role, then it’s totally justifiable to hop on a cross-country flight.

Agreed. I would much rather see one of their seasoned, mature principals (Tereshkina, Kondaurova) or Leading Soloists (Novikova, Osmolkina) than any of the newbies who are getting all of these soloist roles. Though I can be certain that the KenCen October tour with 'Paquita' will be another Khoreva-Nuykina-Ionova-Nagahisa event. Which is sad, there are so many other dancers I'd rather see.

Well, I can't deny it's great casting--I envy everyone who gets to see this....and presumably Lane and Brandt have alternates who have learned the parts just in case....

Oh definitely they likely have understudies. And/or dancers who learned the part now to possibly perform in the future.

I'm very pleased Ratmansky decided to choreograph to the Glazunov score . . . and would love to see this! (Won't unfortunately--at least not this season.) Both casts look appealing--I am wondering about "Spring" though--there must be alternates for the two women listed (Lane and Brandt)...or perhaps it is supposed to be the two women alternating?

I think Brandt and Lane will perform their respective roles in every show. Perhaps Alexei only wanted Lane and Brandt for Spring, at least for this round of performances.

  7. Spring Gala Casting is up:

SERENADE AFTER PLATO'S SYMPOSIUM: Cornejo, Hammoudi, Forster, Royal, Shayer, Simkin, Gorak, Teuscher

*SEASONS: Winter (Bell, Seo, Williams, Hurlin, Paris) Spring (Whiteside, Lane, Brandt) Summer (Boylston, Hoven, Scott, Maloney) Fall (Trenary, Royal)

The other cast for "Seasons" is:

May 21st & 22nd: Winter (Ahn, Teuscher, Fang, Giangeruso, McBride) Spring (Forster, Lane, Brandt) Summer (Abrera, Cornejo, Shayer, Klein) Fall (Hurlin, Hoven)

*This is also the casting for the May 23rd performances of "Seasons" in the Ratmansky Trio.

  8. The 2019 Graduation Performances of the Vaganova Ballet Academy will be the 10th, 12th, and 16th of June on the Mariinsky Stage.

    The program is:

-The Underwater Kingdom from 'The Little Humpedback Horse'

-Pas de Six from August Bournonville's ballet, 'Napoli'

    -Character Dance excerpts from 'Laurencia'

-The 3rd Act Grand Pas from 'Paquita'

This Cinderella is greatly indebted to Diana Vishneva (along with Igor Kolb, her life-support system), Alina Somova and  now Renata Shakirova and a few similar artists for its success at the Mariinsky.

Here again is why I think that Maria Shirinkina can do just fine as well. Start at 1:40:10 and ignore the pop that she and Alexei Timofeyev (I always enjoy seeing him) take at each other.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvKOV8xuMns

Valery Gergiev is conducting, which can normally be an interesting ‘challenge’ for the dancers. Still, you’re guaranteed some brilliant music and the dancers just might give him a well deserved, “See, that!”

How charming! Their chemistry is stunning, and they're both great actors! I've always loved Shirinkina, and kept an eye on Timofeyev.

    Cinderella -- Alexei Ratmansky version.

Featuring -- Maria Shirinkina / Nadezhda Batoeva, Alexander Sergeev / Vladimir Shklyarov, Ekaterina Kondaurova, Mariinsky Orchestra

Nadezhda Batoeva I’m sure can make this work. Having just seen a side of Maria Shirinkina that I never saw before, a vibrant, personality plus entertainer in Alexander Sergeev’s At The Wrong Time, she could also shine. Yekaterina Kondaurova, who I assume will be the Stepmother, should be a hoot. Alexander Sergeev as the Prince, perfect. Vladimir Shklyarov with his virtuosity and character, also just fine.

This could be a treat for Budapest. This was the city that opened the charms of Eastern Europe to me, followed by Prague and fifteen visits to St. Petersburg. Also, my grandmother was born here.  😊

Indeed, what a treat! I'd love to travel to Budapest one day! Definitely on my bucket list.

Apparently Tereshkina feels similarly. I had thought she was injured but she is listed as dancing Kitri at MT on the 14th. She also danced Zobiede in Schereazade on the 9th.  It's understandable if she wants to stay at home to avoid the stress of going abroad and Shyklarov wants to guest in Berlin but these both sound like issues that could have been planned out way in advance to present more accurate information to ticket buyers. It's just frustrating.

I heard somewhere that Tereshkina stayed behind because of her child, though I could be wrong on that one.

I did see her at the Mariinsky Festival as one of the two "Flower Sellers"  in Don Quixote, Annaewgn. I best recall her long animated limbs. She did fine and I look forward to seeing more of her.

Oh good to hear! If you're in SPB at the end of the month it looks like she'll be debuting the First Shade in 'La Bayadere'.

Oh - thank you for pointing that out! I had no idea - how did you learn that? Clearly, I am not as familiar with Mariinsky's dancers.

Xander Parrish’s Instagram stories, and I also had friends who went. There’s been a big shift in casting for this tour, so I wouldn’t be surprised if more names are incorrect in the Soloist/smaller roles.

Did you attend last night, Drew? Here's my thoughts about my first time seeing Mariinsky Ballet live. I went in without any judgement or concrete expectations and left looking forward to seeing them again in the fall for Paquita :)

May Nagahisa did not perform last night. While the program had her name, Maria Bulanova performed in her place.

Thank you! I am not familiar with younger Mariinsky dancers and would not have recognized her. At the open dress rehearsal that part was danced by Shamala Guseinova but, according to the playbill, she is not scheduled for any performance.

Interesting! I know from friends that the Open Rehearsal was Tuesday’s cast, but interesting that’s Guseinova did it. Possibly to rehearse for a performance back home? No clue. Was there a program with casting for the open rehearsal?

Can anyone who attended the opening night performance help me figure out who was the third Odalisque replacing May Nagahisa?

I’ll post my thoughts later after I have seen a couple of more performances. The dancing from all main characters was excellent tonight but I can’t  say that I liked Peter Gusev’s version of the ballet. The libretto was different as well as the  music. I am so used to the comical, light headed and silly treatment of the story that I wasn’t prepared to this more somber interpretation, with somewhat sensible portrayal of women slavery. I thought that dropping of Bribanto’s character out of the storyline after Act 2 was a shortcoming as there was no further development of the confrontation between him and Conrad once Medora recognizes him as the betrayer. And I found the set design gaudy.

The 3rd Odalisque was Bulanova, according to Xander Parrish’s Instagram stories.

  17. NYCB uses Diamond, Emerald, Ruby (paying tribute to Balanchine's Jewels), and the male variation is Gold. Paris Opera Ballet does a similar Precious Stones, except it's Diamond, Gold, Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald. Most every other version does just Diamond, Gold, Silver, Sapphire, with the Pas de Trois being Gold, Silver, and Sapphire, and Diamond having her own variation. I'm not positive what variation Ruby does... I would assume Silver?

As for their purpose, I've always heard that they were wedding gifts for Aurora and Desiré.

I've linked Paris Opera's version (w/Ruby) and Mariinsky's version (no Ruby) below. The Mariinsky version also includes the Lilac Fairy's Act III variation, so if you wish to just see the Jewels, skip to 1:19.

This is a fairly good representation of what I thought Maria Khoreva (with Xander Parish) did so remarkably beautifully last night. Still, the enchantment and lovely airiness is not totally captured in these two dimensions. Great to be able to see this again, in any case.

(Posted at the Maria Khoreva site)

Tonight Elena Yevseyeva and Vladimir Shklyarov gave a fine performance in Don Quixote. Together they danced high in the air with fine linear definition and excitement. Elena Yevseyeva had some very good characterization especially in her more comic moments.

Khoreva is stunning. There are moments that I think could be worked on a little more-- the musicality, drama, etc, but otherwise, wow! She's so young so no doubt, we will continue to see her improve and her artistry flourish.

Also the tutu she wears looks so much better now that Mariinsky has restored it. In other videos/pictures from her debut it looked so drab.

Welcome--you are certainly not intruding!  I hope to see the Mariinsky in D.C. next month when they bring Corsaire. (Perhaps you will be there too?) I don't know that Borodulina will be with them or have a featured role, but I will look out for her.

I had my eyes on going since they announced it after bringing 'La Bayadere', but I won't be able to make it this time-- there's always Paquita in October though!

I don't know what she's doing either-- she wasn't on the East Asian tour, though stayed behind and made some debuts, but then went on tour to Baden-Baden where (according to a comment on a russianballetvideos2 video, so I'm not 100% certain) she debuted the Pas de Trois in 'Swan Lake' (Iater did it in SPB but I don't know why it didn't make it onto her repertoire page). All this to say-- who knows!

    Also greetings.

She's not listed as one of the second ballerinas for today's Festival performance of Serenade but she will be one of the "Flower Sellers" next Thursday in Don Quixote. I'll try to remember to watch for her.

Added: Maybe post a reminder here if you care to. There are so many good things to keep track of at these Festivals.

Pardon me, didn't mean as a soloist/principal, more so a demi-soloist. I believe the four girls who dance with the Russian Girl (danced by Nuikina and Ivannikova in the most recent performances) are also called the Russian Girls, though I could be wrong.

There's a video of this on @like_anart 's Instagram, though that account has gone private. It features Ionova, Borodulina, Nuikina, Mikheikina, and Guseinova.

    Thank you!

  20. Hello there! I've been on this site for a while, monitoring and reading forums though I finally decided I think it's time for me to join in the conversation!

A dancer I've been watching in Mariinsky/Vaganova for the past few years now is Vlada Borodulina, a 2017 graduate, now in her second year in the corps de ballet. She's very low-key, though has some great achievements such as the Diamond Fairy in 'Sleeping Beauty', Peasant Pas and Zulma in 'Giselle', the Flower Sellers in 'Don Quixote', Emeralds Pas de Trois, Diamonds Demi-Soloist in 'Jewels' and most recently one of the Russian Girls in Balanchine's 'Serenade', among others.

She's quite phenomenal-- she has a wonderful ability to fill out the music through the tips of her fingers, incredibly clean technique, and a fantastic jump. I think she's definitely one to watch, and I hope others share my thoughts!
