Agreed, and I think it'd be nice if the New York companies started sharing any new performance content at this time, as so many other companies (especially abroad) have done. I'm sure they have their reasons for not doing so, but if there's ever a time to work past those, now is it. So far their offerings have been disappointingly meager. If they want to maintain public engagement and encourage financial support, I think it would be very wise of them to consider sharing more. Unfortunately, I doubt that will happen.

It looks that European companies are more generous during these hard times, as they share their performances freely and for everyone around the world!

No, not by a long shot. However, when Russia's Ministry of Culture told theaters to shut down, it also ordered them to post content online. That's why so much video is appearing.

Did they shut down? I never heard anything  like that!

And as far as I see they had performances till now! They shut down because of the coronavirus, as everything around the world!

And the videos are online because of this!

For the same reason there are so many other -mostly European- theaters stream their performances for free!

  3. There are much more information about this ballet in the russian language at the site!

" In 1982, a performance was recorded with the participation of the heroes of the premiere - Nureyev, Gilen Tesmar and Michael Denard. And in 1984, in the first season of his reign in the ballet of the Paris Opera, Nureyev "claimed" it in the repertoire of this illustrious troupe, where a number of other outstanding artists joined the leading roles.
    (
And here are the dates and the cast of the performances at the Paris Opera Ballet.

    https://www.memopera.fr/FicheSpect.cfm?SpeCode=MSL&SpeNum=1)

In 1986, Pierre Lacotte staged this ballet in Monte Carlo, and in 1994 - in the troupe he led, Nancy and Lorrain...
"Marco Spada" is only in the Bolshoi, which received exclusive rights to it for a period of seven years."

  4. This Swan Lake was live in cinemas at 2015!

All the performances from Bolshoi have been broadcast in the past!

But it is good to have them back again for all those who haven't seen them before and for anyone who loves to see them again!

  5. I saw Duato's La Bayandere on mezzo tv.

    Nikiya-Angelina Vorontsova
    Solor-Victor Lebedev
    Gamzatti-Andrea Laššáková

Everything was great, the dancers, the costumes, the sets, the directing, the filming, but ...
I think Duato didn't offer anything that made the choreography better than it was.
I found it very supposedly and in some places pointless, as he removed elements and added others that didn't help tell the story and develop the characters.
I only liked the third act as the changes were fewer, and the dancers, as in the whole show, were very good.

I really don't see the Fakir as loving Nikiya in a non-platonic way. Does anyone else have any thoughts about this?

I think Alexandrova said something like that when she danced Gamzatti at the Bolshoi on 2013. And as Gamzatti she didn't say that Nikiya must die but only that she will marry Solor anyway!

  7. 4 minutes ago, FireDancer said:

    The Rajah and Gamzatti, absolutely.

The Brahmin, no, he tries to save her.

The Fakir, no, as he absolutely devoted to God and would never WANT a woman.

Solor, no, as he is in love with her but being made to marry Gamzatti and unable to disobey.

The Brahmin is devoted to God but he has strong feelings for Nikiya, so why not the fakir too?
And he  tries to save her because he hopes she would come to him!

Solor, looks like he fears Rajah more than he loves Nikiya, so maybe he wants to get rid of her. After all Gamzatti is beautiful and rich!
He wouldn't be the first nor the last person that betrays for money and power!

Well, this is the magic of art. We see the same performance but we have so different thoughts and feelings about it at the end.

I just watched the Bolshoi's. He does give it to her. That's too bad! It makes no sense. Unfortunately, the way it was filmed, I couldn't see the context, whether Magedaveya was made to give the basket by the Rajah etc...

It's WAY better when he sees the Rajah order Aya to do something and follows her to find out how to thwart it hence giving the antidote to the High Brahmin...

As I see the story, at the end everyone has reasons to want Nikiya's death.
The Rajah for his daughter, his daughter for Solor, Brahmin becauses she rejects him (his last hope is to save her, but she prefers to die), the fakir because he knows never could have a woman like her, and even Solor too, since he doesn't look too unhappy with this marriage!

I've not seen that... That wouldn't make any sense to the story...

I think it makes a lot.

After all who could put a snake in a basket if not a fakir?
And even if he is not who gives the basket, he looks that he knows what is about!
At the Bolshoi the fakir gives the basket and then runs to Brahmin like he asks forgiveness.
At the Mariinsky follows the maiden and then returns and gives the antidote to Brahmin.

Anyway, if the fakir doesn't gives the antidote to Brahmin where did he find it or why did he carry one?

For the first cinema season, the Royal Ballet showcased their heritage: the 19th-century classics, MacMillan and Ashton - The Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet and La Fille mal gardée, as you have on your list.

The first fillm of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was not live, but it should be said that I was watching pre-recorded performances from the Royal Ballet at the cinema as early as 2006. In some cases these were significantly older films, such as Sylvia with an already retired Bussell, or Fille with Nunez and Acosta. But in other cases, such as Sleeping Beauty and Giselle with Cojocaru, they were shown in cinemas before being issued on DVD. Also, the Royal Opera House has a long-standing practice of broadcasting summertime performances to outdoor screens throughout the UK, which is not exactly the same thing, but something similar.

    Thank you both of you.

I edit the list and I left only the live performances from the first cinema season (2011/2012) till today.
