  1. I've noticed a real change in the students I teach over the past four years. Before that, high extensions were noted, but more and more, now they are expected. I'm beginning to wonder if Guillem and Zakharova (even more so) will go down in history as latter day Taglionis, in the sense that their dancing changed the art form. (My students come from all around the country and from at least a dozen other countries, and we get new students every year, of course, so even though the sample is small, I think it probably reflects the general young dancer population.)

High extensions aren't new, of course. Bournonville used to make his dancers sew a thread from front to back of their skirts to "remind" (or prevent) their raising the leg higher than he wanted. :innocent:

I've found the comments above to be very interesting. There's been a HUGE change in modern dance since modern dancers now take ballet classes, something that would have been anathema before the 1970s.

NYCB instagram has the progression of extensions in Agon. "Take One" https://www.instagram.com/p/BCJb67sB7aC/?taken-by=nycballet

  2. I have a question. Sadly, I've never seen LHBB and people speak of the goofy sets and sparse costumes. Could this be a ballet the Mariinsky markets to families and children? I know they generally don't but maybe if even just one performance gave a slight discount to families, it would be a great way to get them while they are young so to speak!

The Mariinsky and ABT [narrative works] are packed houses at the Kennedy Center. At matinees kids ages range from tots on up. Practically a Nutcracker. NYCB doesn't sell out.

2017: The retiring from Washington Ballet Septime Webre didn't get the international press and accolades of Peck but does good choreography in narrative [and other] ballets. Cincinnati Ballet Nutcracker? Trock? Hamburg plus others?

FYI Riverdance is at Wolf Trap this summer . Why not ABT every summer and...ABT Ratmansky Nut has moved to the West Coast- Segerstrom December 9-18, 2016. Is it anywhere else? http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/17/arts/dance/new-york-will-lose-ballet-theaters-nutcracker.html The Kennedy Center has an annual slot for a Nutcracker over Thanksgiving. Why not ABT annually?

  4. No discernible moment of injury for Skorik. Just a general malaise throughout although her lines were beautiful. Askerov attempted romance in the dream but captured a wili. Act 2- announced Kolegeva doing Raymonda in Acts 2 and 3 and unfortunately didn't also sub in Chebynkina. Kolegeva was enchanting as usual, Askerov delivered excellent class grand allegro on his diagonals. I never saw Skorik in other than act 1. Kondaurova and Kolegeva did entrechats just not quite complete quatre [more height on the jump]. They had great performances throughout all acts/shows. Loved Korsuntsev as de Brienne.

  5. I love the Mariinsky Raymonda production and began my Mariinsky marathon with open rehearsal. 2016 marks the 30 year anniversary since I first saw the Kirov. The DC area community is grateful that Yuri Fatayev always begins the public Kennedy Center Mariinsky run with an open rehearsal. Many artistic directors of other KC annually booked companies do not - no ABT, no NYCB. This run had Tier 1 open plus school groups in Tier 2. At least 1 senior citizen group always comes to this event.

Within the past year other companies with open rehearsal included Suzanne Farrell [recent production with Emeralds] and the Royal Ballet's Don Q [Acosta production with Salenko-Macrae]. The opera house lobby has the glass display case where companies can place costumes for public close-up views. It is very thoughtful that The Mariinsky always has them in place by Open Rehearsal when some companies do not even bother with a display during the show. ABT never put out any of it's highly touted reconstruction SB costumes or wigs.

  6. Yes--I'm not indifferent to casting, but the chance to see this ballet is the great thing with me too. Especially this ballet as danced by this company. (Weather and ballet gods cooperating, I will be there Friday and Sat, and see all three casts. And I hope to meet some fellow posters on this site, too, as Cubanmiamiboy earlier suggested.)

Edited to Add: Maps I would love to see the poster, but haven't been able to track down an image of it.

I can't figure out how to upload pictures! Skorik blue tutu poster is huge maybe 4-5 feet high. https://mapskc.shutterfly.com/
