  3. I also attended a dress rehearsal of the Prologue and Act I of Don Quixote, music by Ludwig Minkus The two leading stars of the company, Natalia Osipova as Kitri and Ivan Vasiliev as Basilio performed, and they were a joy to watch. I returned to see the revised full production staged by Mikhail Messerer, with Angelina Vorontsova (Kitri) and Victor Lebedev (Basilio). Both danced well, especially their Pas de Deux in Act III. However, Ekaterina Borchenko (The Queen of the Dryads) and Veronika Ignateva (Cupid) stole the show in the dream sequence in the third scene of the second act. They were superb.

  5. From Leena Hassan:

Vorontsova a charming Kitri, but she doesn't strike me as a v. musical dancer. Where was her fan during Act III's variation? With his long lines & beautifully ached back, Lebedev's Basilio is a total departure from Vasiliev's. Both proved extremely satisfying.

  6. Make a difference between the two ballerinas with similar names, who dance the Queen of Dryads - Borchenko and Bednenko!

Nov. 20, 7:30 pm Natalia Osipova, Ivan Vasiliev, Ekaterina Borchenko
Nov. 21, 7:30 pm Angelina Vorontsova, Victor Lebedev, Ekaterina Borchenko
Nov. 22, 2:00 pm Oksana Bondareva, Leonid Sarafanov, Svetlana Bednenko
Nov. 22, 8:00 pm Angelina Vorontsova, Ivan Vasiliev, Ekaterina Borchenko
Nov. 23, 2:00 pm Natalia Osipova, Ivan Vasiliev , Svetlana Bednenko

  7. From Leena Hassan:

I'll never be a Don Quixote fan, but Osipova/Vasiliev perform the ballet as if it matters. They give everything of themselves. I adore Osiliev's sense of joy in their own abilities. They endow their characters with warmth & with, but I missed Vasiliev's usual attentiveness in partnering Osipova and surprised at the lack of tenderness in the grand pas de deux. Messerer's traditional Don Quixote, with it's colourful designs & vivid character dances is one of the more engaging versions I've seen. E. Borchenko was gorgeously dignified as Queen of The Dryads. She has such a regal air and immaculate technique.

  8. From Leena Hassan on Twitter

    https://twitter.com/leenahassan

    She wrote:

A very exciting performance. I loved Vasiliev's aggression, Borchenko's musicality & Sarafanov's elegance. It appears that the stage at The Koch was too slippery tonight, with both Osipova & another dancer taking spills during Class concert. Borchenko found many shades in the speedy choreography, Osipova's lightness is stupefying, Sarafanov danced with crisp vivacity, Voronstova dazzled in a series of diagonal turns and Lebedev's sustained ronds de jambs en l’air took my breath away. V. Lebedev is a prime exemplar of Vaganova technique. His lyrical pd2 w/ Soboleva was a high point of a memorable performance. Wildly exciting 'Class Concert' had the audience on it's feet. It's a wonderful showcase for Mikhailovsky.

  9. At first, I was wondering why they didn't bring SL to this tour then realized that Osipova has never danced Odette/Odile with Mikhailovsky yet.

Osipova danced two performances of Swan lake at the Mikhailovsky three years ago. She had a big public success, but many bad critics. She had it scheduled for this September with Hallberg. When he cancelled all his engagements, Osipova cancelled her performance of Swan lake.

Ah... I'm so jealous of the fans in Japan! I'm dying to see Borchenko/Lebedev Swan Lake sad.png

As for Borchenko, she has to be very upset not dancing Swan lake in NY. This is HER ballet. I don't believe the supporting roles can show all her talents.

Here The Black Swan with Borchenko and Lebedev:

Wow! Ruzimatov is still dancing? He's 51 years old! I hope some (Naomi) reports back about this. That's quite a record.

For me sounds like a bad joke. Ruzimatov has to dance Conrad. Both Borchenko and Perren are taller than him. This can never happen at the Mikhailovsky, but the Japan producers insist.

  10. Perren performs many leading roles. In winter 2014–2015, the Mikhailovsky Theatre goes on tour to Japan.

    Le Corsaire

Jan. 08 Ekaterina Borchenko, Farukh Ruzimatov and Leonid Sarafanov

Jan. 09 Irina Perren, Farukh Ruzimatov and Victor Lebedev

    Swan Lake

Jan. 10 Ekaterina Borchenko and Denis Matvienko

Jan. 11 Angelina Vorontsova and Leonid Sarafanov

Jan. 12 Irina Perren and Victor Lebedev

Jan. 13 Ekaterina Borchenko and Victor Lebedev

  11. I have to say that Mikhailovsky was under a great pressure by the organisers of this tour and by the managers. The theatre had to make some compromises. For instance, they don't bring their most successful production - Swan lake - because not an Osipova-Vasiliev repertoire.

I recommend the "all Mikhailovsky" Saturday "Flames of Paris" (matinee) with Vorontsova, Zaytsev, Lebedev and Borchenko in a real primadonna role.
