  1. I just listened to his podcast interview on Conversations on Dance from last April, and he said that he'd be retiring soon (I don't remember his exact words). I sure hope he'll stay with the company in some capacity. Wonder what his last ballet will be. Tarantella?

I just saw a tweet from @theballetbag from the Royal Opera House.
David Hallberg suffered an injury. Replaced by Matthew Ball for act 2 Giselle.
    Will watch for updates.

Oh no. Please post any updates if you're able. Thank you.

Going back to the "New York Friends of Pennsylvania Ballet" and whether they can attract an audience from New York... my feeling is maybe. I know that I am open to it. I would be limited to weekend performances but I find Philly very do-able as a day trip (roundtrip bus fare is less than $25) and a very fun, arts-filled weekend trip. (There is so much to do in Philly and crowds at the Philadelphia Museum of Art are half of what they are at the Met.)

Agree. When seeing their SL in March, I'm making it an art-filled weekend myself. I love the Philly art museum; they have world-class collections and great exhibitions. I always visit there when I go to Philly. When you book more than 2 weeks ahead, you can get good rates on Amtrak providing you can be flexible with the travel times. More expensive than the bus, but less than $100 round trip.

We will feel Marcelo’s absence. I agree that Hallberg is looking elsewhere for opportunities and obviously Simkin has found one. I have to think Cirio is too. It’s a miracle Cornejo sticks around. Is Lendorf still injured? Sorry, but I don’t see anyone of the stature of Marcelo or the particular magic of Hallberg coming up through the ranks. I’m hoping there is a Russian male principal who wants to relocate to NY. I hope NYCB gets a great director or it will really be depressing here.

Yes, it will be a difficult season without Gomes. I'm dreading it. Hallberg is already a permanent guest artist with the Australian Ballet; given his near-career ending injury and long recovery a few years ago, I doubt he's looking for any other "homes"; my guess is that he's permanently dialed back for self-preservation. I wonder if Cirio will return to English National Ballet again to guest as he did last Fall through January. Lendorf is still injured and has recently been replaced for their Asia tour in March. I also don't see anyone of Gomes' or Hallberg's stature in the ranks, and I think many here will agree with you. That's why I favor a male guest artist, or two, this time around.

  5. If they were doing Bayadere on the road prior to the Met, I'm sure Ahn would make his debut then.

I agree that they need to try out Forster (and Hoven). I'm on the fence about Forster handling a full-length, but he should be given a shot. He's been a soloist for three years now.

Though, anything can happen during the Met season, as we clearly saw last year with the multitude of injuries amongst the women. Last minute opportunities may open up for the male soloists out of pure necessity.

In the past, I feel as if all principal casting was firmed up by the time single tickets went on sale (and I only mean the two main leads, not necessarily roles like Mercutio, Espada, Prince Coffee, etc.). I could be wrong, though ... I feel as if once in a while a Siegfried isn't assigned by the time single tickets go on sale.

The fact that both Stearns and Whiteside dance Solor and haven't been assigned to the Seo Bayadere performances leads me to believe that the company is looking at other options. Stearns now has a very taxing schedule, which might not make it feasible to take on Solor, but Whiteside has a marginally lighter load at the moment.

If Lendorf has to pull out of his performances due to his injury, then I can't even imagine all the cast shuffling that will take place...

    Agree completely.

Yep, there is usually one or two lead roles that isn't assigned till later on.

I really hope they're looking for guest artists (at least one) for Bayadere. This is one season when it's needed. If those are given to Stearns, they better cross their fingers and toes and pray to the almighty ballet gods that he doesn't get injured, because that'll be an unreasonable schedule.

If Lendorf returns to the Met season, hopefully he can make it through uninjured.

  7. At this point, the Met season is only two months away. There are still a lot of TBA's on the schedule, a few that belonged to Gomes and Hallberg.

The company just finished their month-long US tour and they're back in NYC for a minute gearing up for their two-week Asia tour later in March. I wonder if this will be sorted before that tour.

Single tickets go on sale in about a month, and I want to be able to scoop up a bunch but not without casting announced. Of course, it can certainly change.

Also curious if Stearns will keep all of Gomes' shows that he was given, or if a few will be distributed (probably not).

Possible Bayadere casting is definitely keeping me on edge.

I think what ABT is saying is that you can't exchange a ticket FOR 5/18 or 5/21. For 5/18 there's already a waiting list. And 5/21 is the Gala. I think they'd be tickled pink if someone changed a ticket OUT OF 5/18 to another date.

Oh thanks. I got the dates mixed up. And, your explanation makes sense.

  9. Lendorf must still be injured because he's been replaced by Simkin in SL. And, Royal replaces him as Purple Von Rothbart on opening night.

For Whipped Cream in Hong Kong the week after, Royal has replaced him in both of his shows (that'll be a debut role for Royal - good for him!).

Wondering if Lendorf will make it to the Met season at all.

I just received my subscription ticket with a note that 5/18 and 5/21 are not available for exchange. Priority exchange week: 3/18-3/24.

This must be their "insurance" for the 5/21 performance in case Osipova or Hallberg (or both) withdraw they'll still have a sold-out audience.

Beautiful. Dowell was my proto-danseur. I watched him on the Royal's Swan Lake video with Makarova at age — 10? 12? — and have loved his dancing ever since.

Ditto! I played that video countless times while growing up. He was sublime.

  12. I've decided to head to Philly for their Swan Lake run next month. I'm looking forward to seeing Baca in a lead role, and how he's progressed since his ABT days. Feels like he left NYC eons ago, but it's barely been 2 years. And, this will be first time seeing Lillian DiPiazza.

Separately, looking at their roster, it's interesting that they only have two soloists (one male, one female) and that neither of them are doing the leads, but several of their corps dancers are. Perhaps O/O and Siegfried doesn't suit the soloists' temperaments; I've never seen them dance. Even though it seems to be Corella's MO to give corps dancers a shot at lead roles, still nice to see so many of them cast.

Is there anywhere I can see a list of all the Martins ballets? my google-fu isn't getting me anything, and my recollections of some of his works are pretty dim (as in i once thought Morgen and Stabat Mater were the same ballet. oops).

as for keepers: I  remember liking les gentilhommes and thinking it had a place in the rep.

If you go to nycballet.com and do a search for "Martins" in the upper right corner, it brings up what seems to be a pretty thorough list of his ballets (the first entry is his bio). See the link below.

And, I loved his Gentilhommes work. Saw it many years ago and thought it was a great opportunity for the men to shine.

Most of their belongings are in their theatre cases which are packed before their tour.  Still, they are carrying bags with daily items.

Yes, but as a former dancer, I know all too well all of the "stuff" that they're probably schlepping to the theatre on their own.
