Guest ivesiana
Anyone going to Coppelia next week-- I highly recommend going to see Shaun O'Brien's pre-performance talks on July 22 or 24. He was NYCB's character dancer for ages, and he was such a wonderful Dr. Coppelius. When I was a kid in the 80's I would always cry when his Dr. C found out the doll was not alive. He was really funny too, without being a ham. He tells terrific stories, and he must be nearly 80 now. I can't go, but I really wish I could. If anyone who goes could post a description of what he says I would be SO pathetically grateful. Link to comment
Farrell Fan
I second Ivesiana's recommendation and request. For years, the NYCB Guild sponsored a weekend trip to Saratoga, a highlight of which was a visit to Shaun O'Brien's house. My late wife and I became friends with Shaun and Cris Alexander and I still exchange Christmas cards with them. I don't think Shaun's Dr. Coppelius has ever been surpassed, and I'm very sorry I'll miss his talk. Link to comment
