New managing director for Texas Ballet Theater

Recommended Posts

In case you missed it, here's a link to a press release posted today's LINKS, courtesy of dirac. A former principal dancer, Margo McCann, has been named managing director of Texas Ballet Theater after 22 years with the company. Previously, she had been serving as Interim Managing Director.

Since there WAS no "Texas Ballet Theatre" 22 years ago, I'm not sure whether Ms. McCann started with the former Dallas Fort Worth company or made the move from Houston when Ben Stevenson did.

Any thoughts about the appointment and what it might mean for the future?

A native Texan, Ms. McCann studied under full scholarship at the prestigious School of American Ballet in New York City. She returned to Texas to join Texas Ballet Theater in 1986. As a member of the company, she toured to Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C., Japan, and Taiwan. Among her favorite performances were principal roles in Rubies, Apollo, Allegro Brillante, Stravinsky Violin Concerto and Romeo and Juliet. Ms. McCann also enjoyed dancing title roles in Ben Stevenson’s Four Last Songs, Cinderella and Peer Gynt.

After 19 years as a principal dancer, Ms. McCann retired from Texas Ballet Theater at the end of the 2004 – 2005 Season. Although she no longer dances professionally, she now enjoys teaching dance to students at Country Day School, and is in her 20th year of teaching. In 2005, she was selected to be a facilitator for the Van Cliburn Musical Awakenings program and has found great pleasure in working with the gifted artists and children.

I have known Margo McCann for the past 9 years. Texas Ballet Theater is very fortunate to have acquired her talent and insight. Ms. McCann , a native Texan and School of American Ballet Alumni, joined Texas Ballet Theater (formally known as Fort Worth Ballet and Fort Worth Dallas Ballet) in 1986. She was hired while Paul Mejia served as Artistic Director. She remained with the company dancing for 19 years. Ms. McCann retired from performing in 2005 to become TBT's Company Manager and Educational Outreach Director under the artistic leadership of Ben Stevenson. She was subsequently named Interim Managing Director after the departure of John Toohey the company's previous Managing Director.
