Are Petipa's Ballets Bad Bombast or Great Art?

Reviewing the rest of SW in my memory, I can't think of anything other than mime that would not work -- and lots (LOTS) that would be quite wonderful in a stripped down design setting. Imagine how strangely beautiful the ethnic dances would work without all the costume signals and many of the exaggerated gestures.

I actually think the mime would work in that setting if it were done properly. What might not transfer properly would probably be all the processions IMO.

However, if the stage were dressed with bare-bones industrial scaffoldings, then perhaps the groupings in the processions would become more apparent.

This is admittedly but I wonder what other choreographers' ballets might/might not transfer well to the practice clothes and no scenery setting.
