Marc Haegeman
This topic has been discussed here quite often in the past, but now is your chance to give your opinion about it in the new For Ballet Lovers Only poll: How do you like your great classics: authentic or updated? Or more specifically: How do you like the Mariinsky's reconstructions of Petipa's Sleeping Beauty (1890) and La Bayadère (1900) by S. Vikharev? http://users.skynet.be/ballet-lovers/ Thank you for participating! Link to comment
Hans
I am pleased to have the privilege of being the first voter I voted very much, but keep the previous versions in the repertoire because of the dubious accuracy of certain parts of the reproductions. Link to comment
Marc Haegeman
I know, thank you Hans! Link to comment
Alexandra
I'd vote to keep the designs and the general mis-en-scene (and balance among processions, classical and character dancing, mime) and fix the inauthentic bits and stylistic anomalies. I'd nominate Doug Fullington to help out there Edited September 22, 2003 by Alexandra Link to comment
carbro
The best option for my opinion was missing, so I voted that originals are "good to see once." I would have voted for "show updated but keep 'original' around for occasional viewing." I am not, however, in favor of updating by jettisoning all mime. Mime is the relief against which the dancing gains dimension. Too many updates seem unaware of that vital element. Link to comment
Marc Haegeman
This poll has now been closed. Many thanks to all who participated! The majority of the voters (almost 37 %) enjoys the authentic versions but thinks that the updated versions should be kept in the repertory as well. 20 % likes the authentic versions even better than the updated ones, but also 20 % finds that they turn the classics into heavy handed museum pieces, while another 16 % finds them interesting to see once for historic reasons, but not really essential. The results can be checked out on http://users.skynet.be/ballet-lovers/ A new poll about the value of pantomime in the great classics is now online. http://users.skynet.be/ballet-lovers/ Link to comment
