IMHO coopers ballet was always meant to be a bit larger tha life. In the film cooper is this ehotistical, womanising and at when disscussing his choreofraphy a little pretentios, character and i think that this is reflected in the ballet, its definatley trying hard to prove a point and contrast with jonathens ballet and also trying to appeal to the average film going audience.
anyway i guess what im trying to say is that like mostn of the film, its a lot of fun but not to be taken too seriously. i love the idea that all the girls who would only make the corphs can suddenly have thier own star ballet made for them!!

yeh sorry, i was thinking of the performance in may wich by the way ws really wonderfull.
could you tell me hiw i could bok tickets to your summer intensive workshop?

hi im planning a trip to rockvile MD in late june early august this year to visit family. i was wondering if abyone knew of any ballrt performances to see at that time.
i have checked the kennedy centre website and its seems that there will no ballet on during july and i would imagine its a bit of an off month for ballet but if anyone can think of anything for me to do / see while im there it would be very helpfull.

well i would call it jazz maybe contemporary but thats just what it looks like to me!!

the very opening of serenade alwyas brings a tear to my eye.
The first time i saw darcey bussell dance swan lake i cried the whole way thriugh her 32 fouttese and most of the pdd!!
Alina cojocarus mad scene in giselle last year was also a real tearjerker!
one other thing, at the end of centre stage when you se all the graduating students in class at their new companies i always start crying!
dont know why does anyone else find this?
-
coopers ballet!! talk about being centre stage, the dancer is completely and utterly in conrol of the stage. of all my non dancer friends who have seen the film, it is the scene with the red pointe shoes that leaves them reeling, definatkey the highlight of the film and an amazing role to dance!
btw this is not to say i would ever turn down jontahens ballet if i was offeresd a part!
-
yes the lake side pdd where u see more of the lake than the pdd was also a low point!!
Wonderfull dancing though.
especially as i wasnt around to see this era in person!

I would arrange plenty of opportunities for students (elemntary school as well as high school) to Go to see their local ballet so that people who would have no other exsposure to ballet would learn to enjoy it.
i would also fund outreach dance progams giving people a chance to learn ballet when they might have never conisdered to.
On the more frivoulus side i would set up a balanchine company in london so that i could see his ballet more than once every few years!!

Does anyone know if the video is compatible with british video machines?
Samba 38, i was given that DVD for my birthday and although the actual filming and some of the camera work can be enfuruating, the avtual dancing is superb!
-
Dale,
do you think you could tell us whats on the video, is it performance or a documenatry?
thanks

yeh i would have to say that although The red shoes is a really faboulous film and really works as afilm as well as a ballet film, i think that centre stage is really something speacial. Not only do i LOVE it but all my frweinds that dont know anything about ballet and would have considered it to be boring are in awe atfer seeing it ......they cant get over the sheer joyous energy portrayed in the film. Im talking about 16 year old boys and girls who are now all i live with ballet!! its quite amazing to see its almost developed a cult following amongst my non ballet friends!!
anyway sorry to ramble on just thought its an added acheivement when a ballet film captures the imagination of a bunch of teenagers who have never seen ballet in theri life!!

i would like to see at least one balsnchine or robbins peice in next years RB season.
as Mr stretton does not seem to be too concered with british choreographers he might as well include some balanchine.
The kirov balanchine programmes pr3esentedmin london were a resounding success and im sure the audeince would be only to happy to see some more of his work.............sime time in the next 2 years!!

i see what you are saying about the diffrenet etiquettes etc ...some of the hamming was quite funny!
it was this particular instance when it really annoyed me as it felt like the priority of the dancers/company wasmore to milk milk their applause then to really show the pdd in the best way possible!!

i was horrified when i went to see the kirov do swan lake at the ROH this summer that not only didi the music stop so that ulina lopatkina (Sorry not sure of exact name) could come to centre stage to milk the applause but the music stopped for a good few moments until sigfreed galantly flounced to his place and then began his variotion after wich the music once again stopped!
for me half the excitement of the pdd is the way that the music and dancing builds to a climax, i f all of this is constatly being interupted then i feel the whole eefet is ruined.
i certanly feel people should applaud the dancers and of course there are plenty of opportunities for this at the end of the act but it seems a pity to sacrafice the overall effect of the act for needless arrogance!
