  1. The Giselle in rep is quite traditional as well. It's a nice production! Honestly, the choreography of their Sleeping Beauty is not always my favorite. (Poor Lilac Fairy has to do that awful fouette arabesque, tempsleve series at the end of her variation.) Some of the other fairy variations are a bit uncomfortable, IMO. But the dancers are sure to be good nonetheless, and the sets and costumes are fantastic!! I'm wondering if Tamara Hadley will be Carabosse.... She's great in that role. (Gloria Govrin also performed that part when I was there!!)

  2. Just noticed on the PA Ballet website that Jen Smith has announced her retirement. I always thought she was such a lovely, clean dancer. I wish her all the best with whatever comes next, but I know she will be missed!

  3. Hmmm... I recall making similar statements about certain dancers in our company while I was still a student. Funny thing is, when I go back and watch old videos now, I watch these same dancers and often marvel at their artistry -- some beautiful nuance here or there that I unfortunately missed while standing in the wings, scoffing at their 4 pirouettes which "should have been 6 or 8."

Opinions are good.... but so is diplomacy.

  4. Just to clarify someone's post at the beginning of this thread -- I don't believe Yvonne Patterson ever teaches company class at PA Ballet. But during the mid-late '90s, she was still teaching advanced class in the Academy one day a week... one of the most difficult classes I've taken in my entire life!

  5. Wow -- an onstage proposal!!! I can't think of anything more romantic.... Thanks for the report, socalgal! I look forward to reading your reviews on next season, too!

Three cheers to David Krensing, one of the most versatile dancers -- and nicest people -- I have ever known! He certainly will be missed.

  6. What a wonderful point! The situation is the same in the college town where my parents live. They make every effort to bring in touring ballet companies, opera companies, broadway shows, etc., but they are always "second level (or lower)" as you say. (Usually lower, frankly.) The majority of the audience doesn't know any better, and thus they never let a performance end without a standing ovation. I witnessed it myself this past winter after an horrific performance of Giselle... a five minute standing O! It's really a shame, when this country has so much to offer, that they seem to only be interested in bringing in Russian companies -- talented, or not.
