  1. Swan Lake, same old production but act 4 will be restaged with the complete act 4 score restored

Bayadere, new production restaged by Makarova with 32 shades and act 2 divertissements(drum dance, water jug, parrots and all) restored

    Sleeping Beauty as announced

Paquitta, co-production with Bavarian State Ballet

    Ashton Cinderella

Raymonda, staged by Sergei Vikharev, borrowed from La Scala as part of the package deal with the new Beauty. La Scala gets the new Beauty DVD and HD broadcast rights while ABT can borrow its Raymonda, not that ABT has any plans for DVD or HD broadcast.

    Othello, Les Sylphides, T&V...etc.

    WOW! WOW!

  2. You are not a lone voice on this. I very much enjoyed Smironova, Shkylarov, Tereshkina and Cojocaru and hope that they return. I'd be surprised if the offered Cojocaru another SL though. It just doesn't seem to be int he cards for Alina to do that role at the Met.

I'm thinking they might revive Merry Widow for Kent's benefit.

    As her retirement performance?

  3. Although not a Balanchine expert, i thought the S in 3 movements was well danced particularly by Lia and Lasha in the PDD and by the high-jumping pair of Jeffrey Cirio and Misa Kurunaga.I loved Bella Figura inspite of the strange ending. We were seated in the back of the orchestra that one can't really see the nudity( unless one has better vision than me).

The BB dancers are very impressive. They should come back to NY again with ,at least, one classical ballet. Nikko better be careful, KMc might be shopping for dancers.FIREdevil.gif

I have my finger permanently attached to the refresh key, waiting for the other pointe shoe to drop -- Veronika and Roberto do the Saturday night SL? One can dream!

I'm seeing the matinee, but if your dream comes true, nanushka, I would cancel my evening plans and stay for the evening performance as well. We'll all be trying to get the few remaining good seats.

Why don't they just let Veronika danced Saturday night with Roberto?Unless they don't want to dance with each other.

  5. ABT has back up performers for the lead roles waiting in the audience or backstage in the event the lead performers cannot continue. The show must go on. It is part of their assigned schedule from ABT. So Hee Seo did not coincidentally happen to be nearby and available to perform. It was part of her job as the understudy for O/O on Monday evening. She was very lucky that Gomes was her partner. In lesser hands the evening very well might have been a disaster.

The theory that Hallberg is replaced because he's too tired after his extra Giselle doesn't seem plausible. Why would they give the performance to Gomes, someone who just performed on Monday and is now - justifiably - even more tired than Hallberg.

Abatt, Does ABT have a third cast on their ballets who are rehearsed with the 1st and 2nd cast during the rehearsal period ? Someone who can take over if the 1st 2 casts can't perform.

  6. I think I already mentioned that Semionova was wonderful in Onegin and Swan Lake (with Gomes in Swan

Lake). Abatt reminded me that she was a very good Kitri though she doesn't seem to fit Kitri

physically like Osipova or Reyes. I also thought she was good in the second section of Symphony in C.

All right maybe she's not quite up to the level of NYCB ballets in the role like Koroswksi, Mearns and Reichlen. But then who is? Semionova was much better than Susan Jaffe when she danced the role years

ago. Jaffe so obviously could not keep up with the other ballerinas in the last section of Symphony

that it was hard to watch. Anyway I think Semionova is a wonderful ballerina. From what I read,

however, she's probably not a good Giselle. I think I'd have problems believing that Semionova's

Giselle had heart troubles. I had problems with Cynthia Gregory as Giselle because she just seemed too

healthy and strong. The same was true of Nina Aniashivili when I saw her dance Giselle in the late

    90's.

Or Martine Van Hamel in the mid-70's

  7. According to their website , Ballet of the La Scala Opera is doing A Ratmansky's new Sleeping Beauty on Oct 2015 as a coproduction with ABT. That makes sense in the present economic conditions especially for expensive productions like this. Alexei is also doing a new full-length Paquita, based on the Stepanov notations, for the Bavarian State Ballet this December. It would be wonderful if ABT can coproduce this or acquire it later.

  8. I saw Gillian dance the part of Lise in La Fille Male Gardee in 2003 (with Ethan Stiefel). They were

both wonderful. In fact the whole production was exquisite. I don't know why ABT has not revived it

since then. I saw Xiomara Reyes as Lise (with Corella) in 2002 and she was just perfect. Both times I

saw Cornejo as Alain. I think he would be even better as Colas. I would be so happy if ABT would

revive La Fille hopefully next year.

I would be thrilled if they do revive it.Herman(w/ S Lane) would be perfect as Colas but i wonder if Marcelo would be too mature/tall to play Colas.

  9. I attended last night's performance w. Murphy and Hallberg. Murphy's execution of the difficult filigree of steps was masterful. It was a brilliant performance. The only error was when she came off pointe during the pdd w. Hallberg. So this technical marvel is human after all. She did beutifully with the graceful hand and arm movements in the choreography too. Hallberg was an excellent partner and was emotionally engaged with Murphy. What a pleasure to see his gorgeous dancing back on the Met stage. It is the only Cinderella that ABT has presented which I look forward to seeing again. (For the Stevenson and Kudelka productions, I couldn't wait to leave and never return). It was an enchanting evening.

Can't wait to see Gillian as Lise in Ashton's La Fille Mal Gardee. I hope ABT revives it next season.

  10. As I didn't see the 2007 performances, I'm intrigued to read that this year's perfs use a "new" production and costumes. I see in the program they were borrowed from Houston. Can anyone tell me whose production was used in 2007? As for this year's, the sets were serviceable, nothing special, but the costumes were really quite beautiful. (And yes, I was at the Saturday matinee, and everything everyone has said is true: performance of a lifetime.)

The sets and costumes of the 2007 production were designed but N Georgiadis.

  11. Also, is ABT using the new orchestration of the score, by Martin Yates? I heard it for the first time in Copenhagen this season and thought it made a huge difference - for the better - to the ballet.

Yes, ABT is using M Yates's new orchestration.

  12. Responding to the comment above about Ratmansky using ABT's home grown artists:

Frankly, I think part of the reason Osipova and Vasliev decided to join ABT had a lot to do with Ratmansky. He was their champion when he was artistic director of the Bolshoi, and he promoted them to principal there. Ratmansky gave the lead role in Firebird to Osipova (with Misty in second cast). He also carved out leading roles for them in the Trilogy last season. Obviously, those ties ultimately were not strong enough to prevent Osipova from leaving ABT for the Royal. We'll see what Vasiliev's future plans are.

Also, the incredible period when Ferri, Ananiashvilli, Vishneva, Corella, Carreno, Bocca, Steifel and others appeared nightly on the Met stage was under McKenzie's leadership. None were "home grown" at ABT, but those were spectacular years when ABT was the envy of every ballet company.

I don't think that period will happen again as there are very few really great dancers anymore. Even the present rosters of the Kirov, Bolshoi,RB does not have many dancers that are "must be seen" IMHO. We were really spoiled by that period and the period in the 70's.

  13. From the outside looking in, the state, management, and development of dancers at ABT -- male and female -- is not making the ABT administration look competent or very bright.

I totally agree, Helene. The only thing I would add is that what you say is an understatement.

How long has KM been the artistic director of ABT? Maybe, it's time for a change?
