  1. Having seen a performance of Shambards while in New York, I didn't really see any violence. In my mind I thought it was indicative of possibly the Romantic era of ballet not existing anymore - I thought the pas de deux showed the rise and fall of this movement in ballet. I then thought that the de Luz/Ulbright and Fairchild/Bouder section was the rise of neoclassical ballet, and that one day soon it could be a fading movement in dance. But those are just the silly musings of a ballet student and avid NYCB lover! I think this might be one of the most interesting ballets I have ever seen - and I will always remember Soto and Weese in the pas de deux - pure abandon on Weese's part.

  2. Although I never got to see her dance, I was able to take class from her at ABT's summer intensive and loved her classes. She was so beautiful just to watch give the combinations! I try to think of her class when I watch tapes of her.

  3. I would have to disagree that Acosta and Carreno are not typical products of the school. There are many dancers, male and female, of their caliber. I would say that Rolando Sarabia and Joel Carreno are on par with them, along with many others. I also think that Viengsay Valdes is one of the best female dancers (and turner) - and how could I forget Alihaydee Carreno? There are also other Cuban dancers dancing in other companies in the US that I think are amazing. While this is my opinion I think it to be a true one. You have to admire what Alicia Alonso has done. Those in NY are so lucky to see this company - also those in Boston who get to see Mr. Sarabia!

  4. Yes! Her turnout is impeccable! The only dancer I can recall that can do an arabesque with minimal opening of the hip! When I saw Alicia Alonso I noticed her walk - almost completely turned out. I only wish I could have seen her perform live - being a ballet student I learn so much from watching her on film.

  5. There will never be another Alicia Alonso. She was artistic, yet virtousic, musical yet technical. I think she brought ballet a big step forward. To think that she originated the lead role in Theme and Variations is only a testament to her talent. (As you can tell, she is a huge favorite!).

  6. I enjoy collecting ballet memorabilia off of eBay and I also buy ballet books off of Strand, ABE, and Alibris but I was wondering if there are some other places to shop online. Ballet pictures are a favorite of mine to collect - any info would be helpful. (I hope I posted this in the right place, if not, feel free to move it). Thank you!

  7. Although I have never seen much of her I can't help but admire Tanaquil LeClercq. Besides being a wonderful dancer (I have seen a few film clips) she had something that just made you want to watch her. I also enjoy Suzanne Farrell, Sylvie Guillem and Viviana Durante.
