I second the ABT with Baryshnikov/Harvey. It is one of my favorites.
-
For me Marianela Nunez as the Lilac Fairy puts the Cojocaru/Bonelli ahead of Durante/Solymosi, but then again I am a huge fan of both Nunez & Cojocaru so I am a little biased.

I guess I will participate, but I haven't seen a lot of the ones mentioned.
Gotta start with Giselle - the main reason I now have 7 versions on dvd
Also
Black Swan
Rubies
I guess I am alone on these
Mayerling (I wish they would put Kobborg/Cojocaru on dvd)
La Fille Mal Gardee

Are there any DVDs of either Marianela Nunez or Alina Cojocaru from before becoming principals other than Nunez in Coppelia? Thanks
Alina Cojocaru is Clara in the Royal Ballet Nutcracker which was filmed during the 2000/2001 Christmas season. I believe she wasn't promoted to principal until April 2001.
I just noticed that Marianela Nuñez is also on this DVD - as one of the leading flowers! She didn't become a principal until 2002.
Cool Thanks I never noticed Marianela in that.

I couldn't find this mentioned anywhere and thought I would share it. Its videos of Svetlana Zakharova performing Revelation. Its the full version. If anyone knows if its available on DVD please tell me.

FYE shows the 8-25-09 release date for the Blu-ray and a date of 9-29-09 for DVD. Amazon still hasn't updated with a release date but hopefully this means decca decided to delay a month on the dvd.

Personal Favorite 5
Giselle
La Fille mal Gardee
Swan Lake
Sleeping Beauty
La Bayadere
Most would probably substitue La Fille mal Gardee for Nutcracker or Coppelia.

What is even stranger, now that the release date is gone they release the artwork for the dvd.

Does anyone know what happened with this title, I had placed it in my wish list to purchase later and now Amazon is showing the DVD release date as December 31, 2020

...when you have only been into ballet for 6 months yet have already spent $1000 dollars on dvds.
The downside is how few videos there really are... You know you've watched too many videos when your wish list includes $5000 more...
I can agree with that. I could always use a couple dozen more Giselles.

Has there been any further word on when we can expect this to be available?

Welcome, Wedgewes! You really are off to a good start!
I suggest Robert Greskovic's "Ballet 101." It's written for you -- intended as an introduction for intelligent adults (as opposed to young dance students) who've just discovered ballet and want to know everything about it. Part of the book takes some of the major classical ballets and goes through a performance on DVD one by one, explaining background, and what one might see when watching them.
There isn't a symbol-per-step guide. It's not that concrete. There are mime (pantomime) gestures that have specific meanings (such as pointing to your ring finger to indicate marriage).
We have forums here for different companies where people discuss performances they've seen. I hope you'll join in those discussions.
Thanks for the recommendation, thats exactly what I was looking for. I have just ordered it off Amazon.

I have just recently started in the world of ballet and have amassed a good collection of performances already (33 )
While I can figure out most of what is happening, I am still missing things. Are there any good dvds or anything that describes what the symbolism for the steps and hand movements represent? Thanks

I can't wait to see this. Giselle is my favorite ballet. What is the running time for this version?
-
Sorry if this should have been asked in the videos section, but I am looking to watch my first Nureyev performance and would like a recommendation as to the best DVD to see him in.

Greeting from KY, USA. I am new to the world of ballet. I have always loved classical music and had quite a few pieces from ballet works but had never given much thought to watching a ballet. I was first introduced thanks to an episode of Angel "Waiting in the Wings" I ended up buying dvds of Giselle (Cojocaru/Kobborg), Sylvia (Bussell/Bolle), & La Sylphide (Dupont/Ganio) and was immediately hooked and now my collection is at 27 and growing as fast as my wallet can replenish. I found this board while researching what dvds to buy and was ecstatic to find so much info archived here.
List of Favorites so far.
DVD - Sylvia
Ballet - Giselle (love the story and already have 5 versions)
Female - Darcey Bussell
Male - Irek Mukhamedov
I expect my mind will change on the dancers frequently as I have not seen many of the favorites on here dance yet. Anyway sorry for the long intro and I look forward to conversing with all of you.

Keep checking Amazon & Ebay, I was able to buy this for $68 only 3 months back from Amazon Marketplace.
