BOSTON BALLET PERFORMS WORLD-RENOWNED PRODUCTION OF THE NUTCRACKER FOR

41ST CONSECUTIVE YEAR

Celebrated Boston Holiday Tradition Returns To The Opera House

November 28, 2008 through December 28, 2008

BOSTON, MA – October 14, 2008 – Boston Ballet’s much-loved production of The Nutcracker, a holiday season tradition in Boston, returns to the beautifully restored Opera House, November 28 – December 28, 2008. All 35 performances of this season’s production are presented by State Street Corporation. The 2008 Nutcracker will feature the entire Company, more than 250 children from Boston Ballet School, and the full Tchaikovsky score performed live by the Boston Ballet Orchestra. All performances take place at The Opera House, 539 Washington Street, Boston.

“Audiences of all ages love our production of The Nutcracker for the impeccable dancing, but also for the enchanting story and the production’s special effects,” said Nissinen. “The ballet’s signature moments—the magical growing Christmas tree, the captivating snow scene, the elaborate costumes, other-worldly characters and the beautiful dancing—bring families to The Nutcracker year after year.”

This stunning show features the full Boston Ballet Orchestra led by Principal Conductor Jonathan McPhee and Associate Conductor Mark Churchill, spectacular sets designed by Helen Pond and Herbert Senn, intricate and whimsical costumes by David Walker and Charles Heightchew and an innovative lighting design by Alexander Nichols.

State Street Corporation, the world's leading provider of financial services to institutional investors, is presenting sponsor of this year’s production. The firm is also a major donor to Citydance, the flagship of Boston Ballet’s outreach initiatives.

“State Street Corporation has been a generous donor to Boston Ballet’s education and outreach programs for over twenty years,” said Nissinen. “The Nutcracker is an unparalleled introduction to the performing arts for both young performers and audiences of all ages. Their continued commitment to Boston Ballet is a testament to State Street Corporation’s long-standing involvement in community affairs.”

The Nutcracker, a classical ballet in two acts based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, follows the enchanting journey of young Clara, who receives a Nutcracker as a gift at a Christmas Eve party. Her nutcracker is ultimately transformed into a handsome young prince, who leads her through an enchanted forest and on to the Palace of Sweets, where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy. Among the ballet’s most famous and memorable moments are a battle between toy soldiers and overgrown mice, a Christmas tree that grows to huge heights, the pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, and a shimmering snow scene.
