  1. some suggestions/identifications below:

= this is Nutcracker finale, w/ Adams as Sugarplum - the ballet mistress might be Una Kai?]

Thanks for all the suggestions. It's funny that you mention Una Kai. I just found out from Patricia Wilde that she lives here in Savannah about 5 minutes from my house. She was going to call her and see if she would meet with me to talk about Diana. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

  2. Aren't those cute!

A Ballet Theatre photo. Fokine's Helen of Troy? I always loved Adams' long legs.

You are correct on this one. It's ABT Helen of Troy.

I went back and put captions on all of the ones that were labeled. I'm sure you guys will have fun trying to figure out the rest. I'm interested to know myself. I was in touch this weekend with Patricia Wilde and her daughter; I'm sending them copies of all the photos so maybe they'll be able to shed some light on some of them as well.

  3. Thanks so much hyperdog for posting these. In her photos Diana Adams seems to have such an elegant dignity about her. And those beautiful legs!

No problem; I'm glad I could share them with others who appreciate them. I agree with you about her dignity and beautiful legs (it's funny because she looks so tall in her photos, but her passport lists her at 5'7"--I was surprised).

  4. I knew you guys would know more about these than I did.

I'm curious about these photos: http://s631.photobucket.com/albums/uu37/hy...&setId=1600

    and http://s631.photobucket.com/albums/uu37/hy...&setId=1600

Adams looks very young. Is the costume possibly from a Ballet Theater production of Baiser de la Fee or Coppelia?

I think that the ones where she looks so young were taken when she was about 12 or so. She looks similar in age there to some others that are labeled 12 years old. I'm not sure if she was in a production then or if they were just taken at the studio where she took lessons from her stepmother.

I'd love to know the story on these two: http://s631.photobucket.com/albums/uu37/hy...&setId=1600 and http://s631.photobucket.com/albums/uu37/hy...&setId=1600. Could this be a Broadway show? Or Stravinsky's Ragtime? The costumes look like the written descriptions of what Adams and Bill Carter wore in Ragtime. But they are different in color and detail from the photo in Rep in Review.

I'm pretty sure that these two are from the movie "Invitation to the Dance". She's listed in the credits as "Hat Check Girl" and is wearing a similar outfit in another picture that I have where she is clearly at the "Hat Check" counter.

Thanks for the info on the others.

  5. Wow! Just last night I was thinking about you and wondering what you decided to do with the items!

You made a good choice. Now I hope the company finds a way to share items with the public, as appropriate.

Thanks; I feel that the company will do a great job with them. I was thrilled that they were excited enough about them to make them their own collection. I've talked with their archivist and she said that she's had many requests for information about both of them, so I'm sure that they will be well utilized. If I can get my scanner to work (don't get your hopes too high), I'l try to post a few of Diana's pictures here before I mail them off. She was so beautiful and there are some great pics of her dancing (both at the ballet and as a youngster) and also some gorgeous headshots.

  6. I'm the executrix for Georgina Bates' estate and I just wanted to let you all know that I'm donating all of her parents' personal items to the NYCB. They will be creating another archive specifically to house these items. I'm very excited that these items will be in a place of honor and that others who will appreciate them will be able to enjoy them. I'm not sure of a specific time frame yet for when they will be available for viewing, but I can post again when I know for sure. Just wanted to share this exciting news with the ballet community.

  7. Have you tried one of the big auction houses or someone who does estates for insurance purposes?

I've sent pics to Christie's and Sotheby's but haven't heard anything back. I had an appraiser look at it (she's the one that told me about Frances), but she couldn't find enough info to give me a value. (I don't think she's very good, but we don't have a lot of appraisers here.)

  8. My name is Ashley Jones and I'm the executor for Georgina Bates' (Diana Adam's daughter) estate. I have discovered among her effects, a ink and washing drawing by Esteban Frances of Beauty and the Beast that is inscribed to George Balanchine. I am trying to find out what sort of value it might have and have run into many dead ends. I thought that some of you might have an idea as to value or where I might find out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can post more info if you need it.
