Lincoln Center status

I was surprised to learn that ABT was not considered a constituent of Lincoln Center.
Is there a reason behind this?  Are they a constituent in DC or anywhere else?

I believe awhile ago ABT decided that they belonged with Kennedy Center. Maybe that's no longer the case.
