A review of the Australian Ballet in "Oscar" by Susan Bendall for Dance Australia.

Quote

Oscar Wilde: wit, raconteur, literary master, loving husband and father, aesthete, homosexual and now gay icon. Such richness to bring to any performing art! Such a story – such a life! World renowned choreographer Christopher Wheeldon has taken the challenge that is Wilde, and woven a full-length ballet from life and story. Not only is this an ambitious undertaking but it is a commission by the Australian Ballet and a world premiere. There is so much to work with, and so many possibilities for handling the material. Each choice leads in a particular direction. Every inclusion necessitates something else being left out.

An interview with Christopher Wheeldon.

Quote

"I'm always looking for exciting stories to tell through dance," he says.

"There, of course, is a place for the 19th-century classics: Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and Giselle. But often for younger audiences, those stories feel perhaps not so dynamic, and not the stories of today."

Obituaries for Michaela DePrince.

The New York Times

Quote

There, she was given a new name that was also a ranking: No. 27 — the least favored among all of the children in her new home. She was served food last, and as a result received the least, and she was given to understand that she deserved her lowly position because of her speckled skin. There was another girl at the orphanage whose birth name was Mabinty. She was designated No. 26, because of her left-handedness. The girls became best friends.

Elaine DePrince and Charles DePrince adopted Michaela and her sister in 1999. DePrince studied at the Rock School of Dance in Pennsylvania and had competed at Youth America Grand Prix, the prestigious international ballet competition at the center of “First Position.” The ballet competition awarded DePrince with a scholarship to continue her studies at the American Ballet Theater’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School.
