A preview of Texas Ballet Theater's "Cinderella."

Quote

When we were invited to sit in on the Texas Ballet Theater’s rehearsal for Cinderella, its first show of the upcoming season, what we didn’t know was that we’d be sitting through a run-through of the full show. This was not only a pleasant surprise, but an illuminating look at the dance’s full potential to tell a story — no words required.

‘Hansel and Gretel’ – presented by Oregon Ballet Theatre

The Brothers Grimm fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” has been the inspiration for children’s plays and movies. Now it’s an evening-length ballet, from Australian choreographer Loughlan Prior, who originally set the work for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. This interpretation of the story of a boy and a girl who encounter a witch in the woods, promises a brighter take on the source material, with an original score from Claire Cowan and just enough spookiness to make it a perfect start to Halloween season. Theatre View New Zealand loved the ballet: “`Hansel & Gretel` has everything a brilliant ballet needs – beautiful choreography and dancing, wonderful music, fantastic costumes and set design and a great story.”

A different kind of “Cinderella” story underlays this performance since Daniela Cabrera was not originally cast to play the title role, her chance coming just a couple of weeks before this show when Whitney Jensen was ruled out due to injury. Cabrera grabbed her opportunity with aplomb, performing with all the grace and dignity that the role requires. She spins beautifully and dances with great discipline and – most importantly – flow, conquering her challenging variation in the Act 2 grand pas de deux with alacrity.
