Pacific Northwest Ballet posted this to Instagram after learning that Ian Falconer, children's book illustrator and theater designer who studied under David Hockney,  has died:

Quote

We were sad to learn of Ian Falconer’s passing on Tuesday. Ian Falconer was best known for his children’s book series “Olivia”, and also designed the sets and costumes for George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker.

From @petboal: “Ian Falconer was a treasured part of the PNB family for the better part of two years designing the most whimsical and wonderful sets and costumes for George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker. Members of our costume shop, crew, dancers and staff hold many memories of Ian’s warmth and brilliance. He filled spaces with laughter, ingenuity and the joy of collaboration. With the sadness of his passing, we also feel gratitude for a lifetime of winning contributions to our lives through books, ballets and operas. We take comfort in knowing his gifts will continue to enchant for generations to come.”
