Mashinka
She also directed London Festival Ballet (now ENB) in the 70's and from the audience point of view was highly successful in that role. I saw her at ROH fairly frequently before the pandemic, always looking timeless and elegant. Her book on dancing in Moscow is well worth reading.. One of the greats of British ballet. R.I.P. volcanohunter
Yes, English National Ballet has paid tribute to her memory as well. Her bio on the ENB site lists some of her remarkable accomplishments, including dancing Odette-Odile with the Sadler's Wells Ballet at age 15 and Giselle at 16. This was all the more remarkable because I doubt there were many ballerinas of her height in the 1940s. There is newsreel footage of her dancing Swan Lake at the Bolshoi, and she had to bend her elbow to a right angle to perform the finger turns at the end of the second-act adage. https://www.ballet.org.uk/people/dame-beryl-grey-dbe/ Edited December 11, 2022 by volcanohunter Link to comment
