Stephanie Dabney has died at age 64.

Quote

Ms. Dabney shot to fame in the company’s 1982 production of Stravinsky’s “Firebird,” in which she portrayed the title role, a mythical red-plumed bird who is captured by a prince (danced by Donald Williams), whom she rescues from an evil wizard. Inspired by the original 1910 Ballets Russes production choreographed by Michel Fokine and based on a Russian folk tale, the Dance Theater of Harlem version transposed the story to a tropical setting.

A review of the Royal Ballet in "Mayerling" by Jenny Gilbert in The Arts Desk.

Quote

The opening night cast sprang no surprises, being largely a duplicate of the first cast in the 2018 revival. Notably, though, as Rudolf, Ryoichi Hirano (main picture, and above with Natalia Osipova) has deepened his interpretation, and he now properly lets rip in the final scenes. In this he is hugely enabled by Natalia Osipova’s frightening self-abandon as the infatuated teenager Mary Vetsera, who joins him in his all-night binges of sex and drugs and firearm handling. We don’t need to know whether she’s really into guns and skulls and suicide pacts or doing it just to please him, but she’s a victim either way.

A look at the tomb of Rudolf Nureyev and his life story.

Quote

As an avid collector of antiques and textiles, it only makes sense that renowned ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev‘s tomb reflects his taste. Located in the Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois cemetery in the suburbs of Paris, Nureyev's tomb is draped with a realistic mosaic of an oriental kilim rug. Created by set designer Ezio Frigerio, who often collaborated with Nureyev, the tomb is a beautiful visual expression of the dancer's remarkable life.
