A spectacular ARB commission that paired choreographer Da’Von Doane, formerly of Dance Theatre of Harlem, with scenic and costume designer Grace Lynne Haynes, a New Jersey-based visual artist whose work has graced New Yorker covers, “Kaleidoscope Mind” achieves that elusive complementarity, the ideal outcome that too often fails to result from artistic collaborations. Its ravishing choreographic and visual design components are so tightly and purposefully integrated that by the end I couldn’t imagine any particle of the piece existing without the rest of it.

A preview of Ballet Quad Cities' new Holocaust-themed program.

The significance - and unfortunately, relevance - of this program is deep. Most of these composers and their works have been largely forgotten. This “forgottenness” sadly has enabled the Nazis’ anti-Semitic agenda to continue: to have not only these composers’ physical lives, but also their cultural legacies, their stories, their meanings, be erased from history. In effect, dealing them a kind of double-death. And robbing the world of their immense, first-rank musical contributions. This program is a step toward a reset, resurrecting the music and vivifying it via dance.

What did ballet give you?

It gave me strength, discipline, a community... and the ability to reach other dancers, using the common language of arabesque and attitude for instance.  Isadora tried to revolutionize dance training with basic action words – leg swings, knee bends, running, skipping, jumping.
