Opera Streams 2022-23

Today the Vienna State Opera began its streaming season with Bizet's Carmen, starring Elīna Garanča, Piotr Beczała, Slávka Zámečníková and Roberto Tagliavini, and conducted by Yves Abel.

These streams are usually available for about three days. Registration is required, but free and very simple (e-mail and password).

Yes. I found Abel's tempos maddeningly fast and liked Zámečníková a lot. The production had a 20th-century setting, without obvious Franco references, conveyed through clothing, since there basically were no sets. Anyone looking for a postcard version of Spain would likely be disappointed, but I've always thought that the opera's sole appeal is its music.

From the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. The production was staged by Saburo Teshigawara and features dancers Rihoko Sato, Joe Takahashi, Shizuka Sato and Hamburg Ballet star Alexandre Riabko. Lawrence Zazzo as Orfeo, Valda Wilson as Euridice and Rie Miyake as Amore, conducted by Masato Suzuki.

Available on demand until April 7, 2023.

Not quite opera, but Calixto Bieito has staged Mahler's Das klagende Lied and Kindertotenlieder for the Vienna State Opera. With Florian Boesch, Vera-Lotte Boecker, Monika Bohinec and Daniel Jenz, conducted by Lorenzo Viotti. This should be available through the weekend.

I became an immediate fan of Asmik Grigorian after hearing her Senta streamed from Bayreuth in 2021.  I loved her Jenufa from Vienna, which has tipped me into an uber-fan .

On Sunday, November 13, the Vienna State Opera will livestream Hindemith's Cardillac beginning at 7:30 pm CET/1:30 pm EST. The production stars Tomasz Konieczny and Vera-Lotte Boecker. The stream should be available for 72 hours.

Another production by Damiano Michieletto, this time Der Rosenkavalier from Brussels, with Sally Matthews as the Marschallin, Michèle Losier as Octavian, Liv Redpath as Sophie, Matthew Rose as Baron Ochs and Dietrich Henschel as Faninal, conducted by Alain Altinoglu. (If you can ignore Rose's intonation. )

Verdi's Falstaff from Florence, with John Eliot Gardiner conducting. The production by Sven-Eric Bechtolf stars Nicola Alaimo as John Falstaff, Ailyn Perez as Alice Ford and Sara Mingardo as Mrs. Quickly. The video is available on demand until 10 June 2023.
