Reviews of American Ballet Theatre in "Of Love and Rage."

Calvin Royal III, made a principal in 2020, and who obviously has not performed a lot in the past two years, made his debut as the energetic hero Chaereas.  He bounded n with his athletic Syracusian cohorts with commanding confidence, looking as if he had been dancing leads for years.  His tall, rangy body doesn't have perfect classical proportions and his hands can be a bit fly away, but his noble carriage and and raw power helped convey the hints of a young Greek god in the opening scene.  His acting was detailed and nuanced, youthful and loving, but impetuous.  His quick, blazing anger at one of the failed suitors made his blind fury when he suspected poor Callirhoe of being unfaithful seem perfectly in character, and his horrified reaction to her supposed death was gripping.  This go-for-broke determination

The scenes between Christine Shevchenko as Callirhoe and Thomas Forster as Chaereas in the June 23 performance this reviewer attended were beautifully performed from the beginning of love’s first blush to the final denouement, their emotional journey rang with an authenticity and power. Also impressive were the performances by the entire company, whose tremendous skill and dedication was clearly evident in each graceful movement as they worked seamlessly together to bring this ancient Greek story so vividly to life while also highlighting timeless themes of human nature in relation to our most volatile emotions.

Quote

Last staged in Johannesburg in 2017, La Traviata-The Ballet will be presented for eight performances at the Joburg Theatre from 1 to 10 July. Originally created in Cape Town in 1990, the production is based on the 19th Century, showing the story of the Lady of the Camellias. Choreographed by Cape Town-based Veronica Paeper, who has created an extensive repertoire of ballets, among which La Traviata-The Ballet is one of her most popular works. Joburg Ballet artistic director Iain MacDonald joins us this morning to share more on this production.
