The Joffrey Ballet and other companies celebrate the centennial of Gerald Arpino.

Arpino (1923-2008) and Joffrey (1930-1988) cofounded the Joffrey Ballet in 1956 in New York — first as a six-member touring company, performing original ballets created by Joffrey in cities including Chicago. After years as a more established company in New York, Arpino took over as artistic director after Joffrey’s death and moved the company to Chicago in 1995. He choreographed a number of works for the company.
