A review of Birmingham Royal Ballet by Louise Levene in The Financial Times.

Don Quixote is a star vehicle but it allows dancers to shine at every level, calling on reserves of virtuosity many had forgotten they had — “I got to use all my Russian jumps again!” said the Kirov-trained American Mathias Dingman, who danced Basilio at the premiere. On Tuesday BRB’s dancing was a little uneven: not everyone jumped well, footwork was fudged, landings lumpy, but the ensembles managed a persuasive Russo-Spanish accent and there were strong solo performances. Alexander Yap was crisp and witty as the preening matador Espada, Javier Rojas a lusty, sure-footed gypsy king. Amor, usually danced by a pocket ballerina, is now a man in an off-the-shoulder tunic arrangement: twiddly, fiddly and irredeemably camp.

Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet concludes a five-year fundraising effort and starts construction on a new theater.

............These funds will ensure the sustainability of the organization and fulfill two of founder Marcia Dale Weary’s dreams: first, to ensure her legacy and that CPYB continues long beyond her, and two, to have a theater in Carlisle. This theater would, in her mind, educate the community about the arts, bring people together, and show what classical ballet can do for young children.
