Houston Ballet holds a gala with a "Jewels" theme.

Quote

Blink and you’d miss the ruby-shaped dance floor at Wortham Theater Center on Saturday night. Look up, and a cluster of diamond-fabric chandeliers loomed overhead. Loose gems were projected on the grand foyer walls next to paintings — not portraits — of Houston Ballet dancers dressed in jewel tones.

But as she slowly adjusted to the studios’ raked floors and rigorous stretching practices, Woodward started learning Russian together with another scholarship winner, Gabe Stone Shayer—now a soloist with American Ballet Theatre and still a friend. She also fell in love with her character-dance classes. “The teachers would ask us to be very aware of our fingertips or the placement of our port de bras to explain a story with movement, which is such a delicate thing,” she says. These skills remain evident in Woodward’s emotive approach to roles like Princess Aurora and Juliet.

A review of New York City Ballet by Leigh Witchel for dancelog.nyc.

In Mearns’ universe, she’s always center stage and we are merely her audience – and as long as she delivers, that’s just fine. To hold up her end of the bargain, she danced the swan queen in the way that looked best on her. A more spacious tempo is right for what she does. At the end of the adagio, instead of the abbreviated sigh usually seen, Balanchine kept the fast coda, but even here, and in her solo, Mearns kept the tempo and the movement spacious.
