A review of San Francisco Ballet by Paul Parish in  The Bay Area Reporter.

Under his direction, the level of classical dancing has risen from bumpy to phenomenal. He's built, on a budget that's risible next to that of the great companies of Paris, St Petersburg, London, New York, a company that can be mentioned in the same breath with theirs by creating a community of talent.

This is not a string of pearls company. The question he seems to have asked is, "Can they dance?" When Jacques d'Amboise came to set Apollo on SF Ballet decades ago, he said he wondered if there was a male dancer who could do the role. After he got here, he said, he was amazed to see that any man in this company could do Apollo.

At its core, “Blake Works I” is an ode to dance as an art form. Considering the company initially rehearsed Forsythe’s piece in pandemic-safe pods due to COVID-19, performing the piece for a live audience at the War Memorial Opera House feels all the more gratifying. Given its creative influence from other dance styles, this performance introduces new beginnings for contemporary ballet — a hopeful future in which the style will continue to evolve.

“As much as we love the Kirov Academy, we can’t ignore the financial reality,” Kirov executive director Pamela Gonzales de Cordova wrote in the email.

School officials declined to detail the financial realities of the academy, which offered academic and musical programs in addition to its lauded Russian-style ballet training.

The school said it had hired counselors to aid in the transition, and its artistic director, Joan Boada, who joined the academy in September, will take several students with him when he moves to Boston Ballet in June. The Rock School, San Francisco Ballet and the Washington Ballet are among the dance organizations that have invited Kirov students to audition.
