dirac
A review of the Ballet International Gala by Madelyn Coupe for the Fjord Review. Quote BIG set high expectations. It aimed to bring world-class artists together for an intimate set of performances. And, for an audience deeply deprived of the annual QPAC International Series (an initiative that has brought companies including Paris Opera Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, and La Scala to Brisbane), the gala was a welcome feat. In reality, however, something was amuck. Link to comment
dirac
Interviews with this year's Telstra Award nominees. Quote In 2022, five have been nominated for the event’s two awards: the Telstra Rising Star Award, where one dancer will be awarded $25,000 by a panel of judges, and the Telstra People’s Choice Awards, which includes a $15,000 prize for the winner, determined by an online vote from the public. This year, the nominated dancers include Thomas Gannon, Adam Elmes and Lilly Maskery of the Corps de Ballet, soloist Rina Nemoto, and coryphée Lucien Xu. Their nominations are particularly exciting considering that ten former TBDA winners have gone on to become principal artists at the company, making the five ones to watch with a keen eye in the season ahead. dirac
A review of New York City Ballet by Mary Cargill for danceviewtimes. Quote Tiler Peck made her debut in "Mozartiana", dancing the opening Preghiera with a powerful stillness, using her face to catch and reflect the light. She moved with a calm deliberation, pushing through the air like a marble statue come to life. It was a serene, unmannered, and rightly moving rendition. She was less successful in the playful, off-centered movements of the Theme and Variations, where her compact, classically proportioned body made the little throwaway twists and turns emphatic rather than witty. The impression of two people having a conversation, variously lighthearted and profound, often disappeared into a series of solos. Nevertheless her musicality and effortless control gave the overall performance a rare beauty. Link to comment
