An interview with Joshua Thake of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo.

Thake found himself embraced by the city's sisterhood of drag.

"The first queen who looked out for me was Honey Mahogany (San Francisco's first-ever contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race)," Thake recalled. "She and Peaches Christ sponsored me to do a one-woman show. I lip-synched the entire Judy Garland Carnegie Hall concert. It was the very last performance at Supperclub in SoMa. I did the Desperate Divas pageant that Donna Sachet emceed. I was living in an SRO on Hayes Street, so I'd walk over to do the Saturday night drag shows at Marlena's. San Francisco's drag community is incredible."

Q&A with Justin Peck and his collaborators on his new piece for New York City Ballet.

How did you discover Eva’s work?

PECK While I was doing a lot of deep-dive listening and research on Caroline’s process, I noticed that a lot of the lyrics were pulled from the LeWitt instructional drawings. Through that rabbit hole I stumbled on Eva’s work, and was immediately blown away by that too. You can feel a little bit of her father’s influence, but it’s so uniquely her own voice, and has a dimensionality and theatricality that I thought would work well in a live performance setting.

Bruce Marriott announces the closing down of the DanceTabs website to new material.

It would be nice to carry on, but age takes its toll on us all, and running a website on this scale takes much time and energy. But it’s also a time of huge change in dance and the way it is covered (as in society generally) and I increasingly feel it’s for a new generation to propel things forward and for writers, and those who love the art, to cover it in new and vibrant ways, including on social media. That and what you might call the traditional reviews we have specialised in. It continues to be a pain that on the web nobody looks to pay for anything.

Scenic and lighting director Joseph Hassler has died at age 83.

Quote

He later spent two years as a medic in the Army, after which he returned to Erie and was reunited with the Civic Ballet Company. It wasn't long after that his attention turned to scenic and lighting design and he suddenly found the creative outlet that would define him for the rest of his life. Not only did he take over those duties for the Civic Ballet Company, but his work soon drew the attention of The Youngstown Ballet, The Chautauqua Ballet Company and The Buffalo Dance Company.
