San Francisco Ballet Season 2022

Recommended Posts

The season has been on-line for quite some time, opening February 1: https://www.sfballet.org/tickets/2022-season/

I stumbled onto the fact that "choreograph your own" with seat selection is now available. It annoys me that no notice was sent to friends or past ticket buyers.

Another annoyance: even though it lets you buy a three-program CYO subscription, it won't let you go back and get additional tickets on programs in your package. You're told to come back November 17 for single ticket sales. I just find that strange. Once you're bought a package, why can't you buy a few more of those programs? I'm logged into my account, so it knows I'm a Friend. Well, better than nothing.

It appears San Francisco Ballet continues to have some administrative struggles. Last week, I was rummaging around the site and discovered that I COULD now buy additional tickets before November 17 when they go on sale to the general public.  Was that because I already had a "choreograph your own" or a subscription a few years ago or am a Friend? I don't have a clue. Today I received an email notice that, as I am a friend over $200, I could now buy single tickets.  It just seems odd that they change settings on access to single tickets, but forget to notify the people they are trying to benefit.

Yes, people who are currently subscribers, or who give donations over a certain amount, get special privileges such as a discount on ticket prices. ($200 is the Contributor level). If you log in to your sfballet.org account it should tell you something about your membership level.

The lack of communication is an issue though. I think you should contact SFB and tell them your concerns.  https://www.sfballet.org/discover/contact-us/

SFB has posted a number of "Pointes of View" and "Talking Dance" videos for the 2022 season on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/c/sfballet/videos

I have watched some of these videos.  The 'Pointes of View' lectures occurred on Wednesdays at 6 PM prior the scheduled performances.  Now they are on FB Live & YouTube Live the day of the performance and will be available through the end of the season.  The first was a discussion with Helgi & 'The Three Graces' - former Ballet Mistresses Bonita Borne & Betsy Erickson and current Ballet Mistress/Master Anita Paciotti.  The second focuses on 'In The Night' which was part of Program 2.  The 'Talking Dance' videos are short & entertaining, with the dancer walking us through their thoughts while going through what we are seeing on the screen.  One is of Luke Ingham talking through a section of 'Caprice', the other is of Mathilde Froustey as Kitri in Act 3 of Don Q.  Definitely worth checking out.

Ulrik Birkkjær danced his last performance with SFB at the Gala last night. On March 20, 2022, he posted on his FB page, available for the public to see, that he had performed his last James ever in his last season with SFB.  I am sure that I am not the only person who will miss him.

Birkkjaer is one of the best all-around partners I've ever seen. Every woman that dances with him seems to be operating on a whole other level of confidence and inspiration. He's one of the most joyful male dancers, for sure. It was a privilege to have seen him. For me, he was one of Tomasson's  very best 'acquisitions' over the years.

And now that Ulrik has directed a dance festival, will that be his new direction of choice? Or perhaps as an A.D. somewhere?
