dirac
A new TV series movie with a ballet theme, 'Birds of Paradise,' debuts on Amazon. Quote The type of porn they bring to mind is less the hardcore variety (which is what Croce was referring to), and more the softcore kind that used to play on late-night premium cable. There’s a basic formula: fit, attractive young people; some kind of prestigious dance academy; an expected quantity of abuse, humiliation, self-mutilation, injury, past trauma, mental anguish, and sex. Sarah Adina Smith’s Birds Of Paradise, about two American dance students competing for a slot in the Paris Opera Ballet, belongs to this category....... Link to comment
dirac
A review of West Australian Ballet in "Coppelia" by Lucinda Coleman for Arts Hub. Quote Carina Roberts’ Swanilda was an accessible character, and responsive to the audience, who in turn warmed to her dramatic storytelling. Oscar Valdes, who danced the role of Franz, had the chance to shine in Act III. He comfortably executed solo work with strength, confidence, and skill. Swanilda’s friend, Mary, performed by Glenda Garcia Gomez, and Mary’s love interest, Henry, performed effortlessly by Juan Carlos Osma, executed a playful duet which also won audience favour. The skittish character, Liesl, was sweetly danced by Nikki Blain. Christian Luck, cast as Dr Coppélius, embraced the dramatic nature of the role, helping move the story through to an ending which saw Swanilda and Franz happily reunited and Dr Coppélius accepted into the community as they all dance together. dirac
An interview with Erina Takahashi by Lyndsey Winship in The Guardian. Quote Right now, she’s about to play Marie, the female lead in Khan’s Creature, premiering after many Covid delays. It’s loosely based on Frankenstein. Marie is the titular Creature’s carer, and they forge a deep bond. When Takahashi and I speak, the piece is very much still evolving, and it will continue to do so even once they’re on stage. “I am always fascinated by working with him,” she says of Khan. “Even when I’m on the tube home my mind is going in a way I’ve never experienced in another ballet. We’re creating the story, along with the emotions, as we’re creating the steps; I am becoming Marie.” Link to comment
